“In the last half second of play,
Bob Gamble, from the middle of the
court, on the dead run, sent one
through the loops without touching
the rim. The ball had just, left the
hands of Gamble when the whistle
called things off for the night."
“For Mercer, Ralph Wear was
more than half the cheese. At the
opportune moments, when ' Mercer
just had to have a goal, you could
count on Wear to deliver.' He is one
of the fastest forwards Mercer has
ever had, and covers the floor in a
masterly tashion. Gamble played
well also.. Outside of saving the
game by his goal, there at the last;
he also accounted . for six other
points,” ~

"Harmon is not much bigger than
a split second but is well put' to
gether. He did nine-tehths of the
recovering for Mercer.”

“This town (Macon) certainly likes
basketball. Two thousand ■ people
jammed their way into the big au
ditorium.”
“Macon was generous, hospitable,
and courteous. Stories of atrocities
in Macon now seem, a little queer. It
is as if one takes a chorus girl out
to dinner and discovers that she does
not drink und does not care . to
smoke.’.’ . ,

‘■Locked tooth and claw, like a cou
ple of young wildcats, Josh Cody’s
Hope Wreckers’, and-Tech’s ‘Indoor
Tornado' went to a decision in one of
the fastest and closest basketball
games ever witnessed on a local
door, in the city auditorium Saturday
night and one sensational basket, a
margin of two points, the result of
the ball .nestling in thi web when di
rected by Bob Gamble's uncanny eye,
just as the referee’s whistle cut the
air to-end the game, gave the Orange
and Black a wonderful - victory. It
made the score read, Mercer 28, Tech
20.” " . .

“'I he opening of Mercer after the
Holidays with 462 names' on the reg-!
istration book ^of the academic de- '
partment is very gratifying and en- j
jouruging,” said President Weaver
..|i giving out an interview Monday ;
•venmg. “Owing - to the stringent
.niancial conditions prevailing over!
tl.e State, a large number were not
expected to return for the winter!'
.cim, yet not only have most of these
vgistcred hut also many new names
are on the book and several more!
.ludents are expected to report tiur-

w hen asked concerning the activi-1
cies of the new term,'Dr. Weaver was
• erj muchly disappointed over the
.act that Sir William M. Ramsey, of i
Edinburgh, Scotland, who' was to
■p.ca.v at the Ministerial Conference,
which was to convene sonic time
.luring the present term, was unable
to keep, his appointment. During the
war Sir Ramsey' lived in. the United
States apd Was a distinguished arch-;
aeolbgist, having dorte- extensive]
wofk in this line in As'ia Minor.,
Among other things.' Sir' Ramsey is
most entertaining speaker and his
message to Dr Weaver that he will {
not return to this country in time
for . the conference . is a keen disap
pointment to those who were looking
forward to hia address. Owing to
this fact the Ministerial Conference
has been postponed ' uhtil next year.
During the present term two mqre
new buildings will be opened. The
oeautiful president’s home, which is
directly, in front of. the Tuttrad
Square Baptist church, will soon bo
completed and Dr.. Weaver will take
immediate possession. Also the new
dining hall which will accommodate
600 students is rapidly nearing com
pletion, and in a few weeks the
.‘Mercery” will be moved from Sher
wood Hall to its new quarters.

“George Harmor), that .brilliant
little basketcer in Mercer’s camp,
builf so close to the floor he is lost
most of the time So far as tne oppo
sition is concerned, was always on
the job. He countered, ducked and
dribbled his way through Tech’s
lurching ranks time and agairit,bring
ing the bail from his own territory
and into ' the 1 home , sector where
Wear, who covered himself with that
peculiar glory . that sets the hearts
of a college crowifTfire, or Gamble,
always* shooting, constituted a triple
threat that was just too much for
Tech to master. A triangle of nerve,
skill and daring, they formed the nu
cleus of the Mercer offense, while
they were bucked up in perfect pro
portion by Smith and Harper.”

"just before the end of .-the ganle
the score was tied up again and it
looked like extra periods, when Bob
Gamble untied the shot that sent the
three thousand fans home happy.'

. in the Macon Telegraph
Headline: “Ralph Wear is Mercer’s
■tar in {treat battle.”
“From a standpoint of stars there
is absolutely no question as to the
Mercer bright ifcht. Little Ralph
Wear, left forward, played the game
of his life and to hi* work can Mer
ger students attribute the Victory of
the , Orange and Black. - Wear was
never better. . ... It was Wear.that
steadied the local outfit and his long
field goal* that kept . Mercer from
losing hope and certainly the game.”
“Harmon’s unselfishness in ’ not!
shooting for baskets but feeding thei
ball to his mates made him an idol'!
with many a Mercer supporter.” ■ I

"It was Gamble who shot the goal ,
that won the game and it was Gam
ble who never flinched but drove on
und on in an attempt to get into
shooting position. He was closely
guarded throughout the struggle.”
“Manly McWilliams, who substi
tuted for Harper, and Wilkes, who
went in for Smith, both put qp a good
defensive brand of. ball and deserve
more, praise than can here be given,
for they played, really better than
they knew how."

"Three Atlanta newspapers were
represented at the game last night.
John Stilton, end' on Tech’s . football
team the past two years, covered for
the Constitution; Oscar Davis, guard
on Tech’s grid team, was here for
the Journal, while Ed Danforth,
sporting, editor, of the Georgian.' .rep
resented ‘his daily.” .

“An idea of how close the game
was can be gained from the fact that
the 1 score was tied six times. The
count at these tipies read 10 to 10,
13-13,. .18-18, 22-22, 24-24 and ?6-28,
Just as the timer blew his whistle,
the ball was in the middle of its
arch from the hands of Bob Gamble,'
who was shooting front mid-floor, and
it swished through the rims for a
tally and the game.”
“The crowd that.attended the bas
ketball in the city auditorium Satur
day night set a new record for at
tendance.. The number of souls
crowded into the building, if care
fully counted, probably would reach
pretty close to the 3,000 mark.”
