OUR TEAM!
It is good to be able, to call such
a team “our” team. Gallantly, cleanly
have they upheld the standard of
Mercer through five gruelling,' hard-
fought contests in the Atlanta tour
nament. Harmoh, Smith, Gamble,
Harper, Pope, Wear, Wilkes; McWil
liams, all have done for Mercer the
most that could be done under the
circumstances. •
It Is the consensus of opinion that
our team defeated four of the best
quintets in the South. Centre, Ken
tucky State, Chattanooga, and Tech
all took the count from the Orange
Typhoon which swept right up to the
finals through the roughest sea navi
gated by any crew.
And the fair and chivalrous spirit
shown by all the teams in the tour
nament, the high tone of the press
discussion, the interchange of com
pliments between rival colleges, all
these things mark a new era in inter
collegiate athletics. Mercer men,
losers in the finals, have uttered high
praise for North Carolina, their win
ning opponents. Georgia, through
her college paper, the Red and Black,
has generously / complimented Mer
cer’s team as worthy to represent the
state in every respect. ,.
Here we quote The Technique,
Georgia" Tech’s organ. Says The
Technique, "Mercer also deserves
praise for her great team, and if we
must lose, we are glad to lose to a
team of her calibre.”
Thanks, Tech! Thanks, Georgia!
It is an honor to have athletic rela
tions with colleges of such fair
sportsmanship as yours. Mercer, all
of Mercer, appreciates your frank
words' of congratulations.
To our team: adding to the chorus
of Voices raised to sing your praises,
we wish to thank you for your ac
complishment, and assure you of our
unstinted support in the future. •
TO MERCER
College men should strive to ac-
quirc, kmong other things, two char-
tertstics: first, the habit of 1NDE-
SNUENT THINKING, and second,
o' quality of TEACHABLENESS.
Inuepenuent,-thinking is almost a
lost art.;, It must be acknowledged
that there is among college men. a
dearth of original mental effort. Men
rest upon their oars, content to think
the same old thoughts and to follow
the same old ruts of life, that have
oeen beaten so hard and- so deej^ by
he countless generations gone. Like
the mountaineers who . followed the
ndian trails'with their roads, up and
down hill,, winding about wherever
he temporary opening-led, when-they
could have followed the level ridge,
just so do men follow the- ancient
rails of thought and action when
hey might walk the heights of origi
nal and independent thinking.
WhercveT there is a hill, a hard
place in the world’s life, college men
should THINK, smooth the trail,
itraighten the road. Second-hand
.houghts are like second-hand clothes,
/"airly good if they fit; ,but they are
often too full or too tight for the
times. • ; ; ”
It is true, as the' German adage
puts it, that all that is new is not
gOod, ami all that is -good is not new,
out the independent thinker can also
oe TEACHABLE, learning and re-
.aihing the wisdom and. truth of age
and experience, and at the same time
ouilding upon it a new and helpful
edifice of thought and action.
To the gallant Mercer five, “in the
heart of Georgia," we extend our
heartiest congratulations on the
splendid essay they made to win the
S. I. A. A. championship "at basket-
. bajk They were beaten in the finals,
yes, but beaten by a team that was
able to lick our own Bulldogs. And
the Baptists were not ousted before
they had masterfully completed an
exacting task, probably the most
.difficult assignment handed any team
in the' tourney—that of putting Cen-
• tre College, Kentucky State, Chatta
nooga, and Tech out of the running.
It is a noteworthy 'accomplishment,
is the rapid resumption of a lost
athletic rating by the Macon school.
In other days,'Mercer knew, few, if
any, peers in the commonwealth of
Southern intercollegiate athletics.
Under the new and progressive re
gime of its corps of officers, the
M£con s tiniversity is coming back into
its athletic own.
■ Again, congratulations, Mercer,.you
were good enough to stand for. Geor
gia in the finals!—Red and Black.

GOING STRONG
PERSONALS
ACTION NEEDED
Tennis weather is upon us, and the
hundreds of tennis players at Mercer
have no suitable courts for this en
joyable and beneficial pastine. It is
to be hoped that, the athletic com
mittee will soon realize the situation
and take steps to provide at least
our good tennis courts.
When one. considers the attraction
and benefits of tennis, it is strange
that provisions .for the game have
been so woefully neglected at Mercer.
Baseball, football and basketball can
be played by dozens of men, while
hundreds can wield a racquet well
enough to be exercised thereby. Ath
letics for all demand that we have
our tennis courts put in shape.
This matter has been suggested
time and time again, but still the
•ourts are in- worse condition than
ever. A little effective and timely
action in regard to tennis would meet
with hearty appreciation on the part
of a host of Mercer tennis enthus
iasts. ',

WOMAN
her
By R. L. Brantley
Of all the mysteries I’ve known,
One is deeper than the rest,
Tis fair woman perched on
throne,
Man just lives "for her tp jest.
She is clever'and so. charming
Man is swayed this way and that.
Her influence is alarming,
She’s the best at tit for tat.
Oftentimes she’s cruel he’arted,
And poor man is knocked about.
It’s a wonder they’re not parted, .
But man always sticks it" out.
His distracted mind remembers
Back to days when he was young,
When he watched the dying embers.
Heard, great tales from mother’s
tongue.' •
Maybe it’s the thought of mother
That has saved man from his wrath,
Made him call each man a brother
And forget the angry patH.
Men admit woman’s queen, of all, .
She’s patient and always kind,
Relieves your troubles, great, and
small,
Creates ties that ever bind.

University in Warden county and in
all of Eastern Georgia and to induce
other Warren county boys to attend
Mercer. '
