Dr. Quillian's address, from its be

ilercer basketeers as “a perfectly
munificent team” was one continual
iound of praise of Coach Cody and
the players.
Dr. Quillian attributed much of the

Dr. Clay Walker, chairman of the

Merrer’ei athletic teams a year ago

Captain Stone A. Co. have been
getting in some good work toward
turning out a good baseball team
luring the past few days. • No gen-
ral practice hus been called but the
ecent warm days have brought out
flirty, or more candidates for the
team. .
Dan Hammack has been seen ca
vorting around in left field and that
•ioy looks good for All-Southern se-
ection this year. He cove ring
ven more .territory than last year
and gets the ball anywhere from
shortstop to the fence.
Harvey Shepard hap acquired 60
per cent more speed since last year
and was grabbing the apple in all
parts of the field, proving that he ia
not out of the- running when the team
i» selected. .Harvey seems.to have his
eye on the ball when he comes to
oat, also. . p .
Some others who look good' in the
outfield are Shorty Poore and Shorty
i’etteway. ■ These boys are fast and
appear to be right, Henderson looks
like a million dollars on short. He
gets after the ball in great style and
don’£ miss ’em. George ' Scars
second showed some classy stuff and
covers the keystone' position in excel
lent style. Both of these boys are
going to make somebody hump before
they are beaten out' for these places
General practice begins immedi
utely after the S. I. A. A. tourna
ment is over and some seventy-five
have announced their intentions of
trying.out. Coach Cody is going to
have mdre material thbn he can
shake a stick at and Mercer should^
have a team that will long be remem
bered.
Among the candidates who have
been oUt during the past few. days
are:, “Tige” Stone, Allie Thompson
Clay Ryals, Clegg, “Hop" Morgan
Sid Ellison, Dan Hammack, Harvey
3hepard, Lee -Henderson, Geo. Sears,
‘SHorty*? Poore; "Shorty” Petteway
Lewis Cobb, Lane Tennille, Wallace,
Lovett, Thomas, O'Quinn, Daniels

With 34 seconds left to plsy, Tech
High leading by a count of 38 to 35,
Lanier High School staged a brilliant
rally and defeated the Junior Smith
ies in the final and deciding game of
the G. I. A. A. tournament in the
New City Auditorium last Saturday
night by s score of 39 to 38. One of.
the. greatest crowds of the season
witnessed the greatest prep basket
ball game that has ever been played
in the city. At the time that the
Anal goal was negotiated only six
seconds remained of the game, and
the Atlantans in these few brief mo
ments were unequal to snatching vic
tory out of defeat.
With three minutes left to play,
the Atlantans' in the lead, 33 to 32,
Youhg Stribling, of the Lanier team,
unquestionably bright individual
star of the tourney, was ejected on
account of personal fouls and "Sher
lock’/ Holmes substituted. Tech High
ran the coilnt to 38 to 36, when
Holmes negotiated a pretty field goal
firom the foul line and on the next
tip off got the agate and passed to
Bunce” Skinner, who registered the
two pointer that won for Lanier the
first G. I. A. A. tournament held in
the history of that organization.
The struggle was a fitting climax
to not only a pretty game of basket
ball but also to a highly successful
tournament in which seven prep and
high school teams of the State 'en
tered for the highest laurels.
