GEOLOGIST SAYS MACON
WAS ONCE A SEAPORT
Old Sea Coast, Now Fall Line,

That the site of Macon was once a
seaport, bordering on the Atlantic
ocean, was a statement made by Dr.
Henry Fox in his lecture, “Opportu
nities for Biological Field Work,” at
a regular meeting of the Alembic So
ciety, May 3.
Prior to this statement he outlined
the different districts of' Georgia and
gave the characteristics of each. He
said that all of Georgia below a cer
tain ‘-’fall line,” drawn from Augusta
and running through -Milledgeville
and Macon to Columbus, was once
ocean floor, as could be proved by the
fossil' finds and geileral nature of the
rock, which is soft. The land to the
north of this line is entirely different
and all of the rock there is hard. He
estimated' the date of the shore being
along this line at between eight and
fifteen million years ago.

ing, as he explained to the society, to
discover tracts to be set aside as re
serves. He said that Okeflnokee
Swamp was the ideal reserve and that
Georgia would be greatly benefited if
it were reserved either by the State
or Federal government.
“The collection of apecimens is vital
