BRAZIL STUDENT IS
SOCIETY DEBATER
Three Freshmen representing the
negative side of the question, “Be-
solved, that Mrs. Felton should be
allowed to hold the Senatorial chair
until March 4tth,” won the unani
mous decision of the judges over the
II rat-year men, Duns ton, Baugh and
Dodson, who championed the affirm
ative of the question, in the Phi
Delta Hall Monday evening.
In fighting fqr their side of the
question the affirmative speakers
brought out the sterling qualities of
the “grand old- woman of Georgia’’
and gave some interesting argument
why women should be recognised and
honored, whereas the basis of the
negative's argument had to do with
the constitutionality. of. the question.
Dunston, who came all the way
from Brasil to study at Mercer Uni
versity, made three interesting points
in his discussion, his third being a
call for the second speaker to come
forth. •' '
Several new members were added
and showed that they know some
thing of the fundamental principles
of debating.- This with their society
spirit will no doubt bring out many
new orators of note this year, and
unless Southern colleges have im
proved to a very considerable extent
over last year, Mercer is destined to
keep her undefeated record unbroken.
There is considerable agitation
among the members of the society
for the return of the State Oratorical
Contest, which was in vogue several
years ago. Such a contest would be
welcome by the Mercer students and
would stimulate those oratoricslly
inclined, > L. E. Smith.
SQUIRREL FOOD
By Milton K. Wallace
A TOAST
I drink, and unabated,
With soul and heart inflated
With love! A passioned love!
To her whose watchword “duty,”
Enwraps her soul in beauty,
Like that which shines above.
I drink to the fleeting years,
Of joys, of hopes, of fears;
For to me there is none other.
80 I drink, and unabated,
With soul and heart inflated,
To her—my mother.

Concerning Ye Modern Drees
Looks to us likg the Blue Law en
thusiasts and self-apointed promoters
of public morals would pass a law or
something to abolish the present
style of long dresses. One has to.
take too big a chance nowadays with
the present style and any little boy
or gir| on the back row knows that
taking a chance is gambling.
Knickerbockers are the only sensi
ble clothes for the women. The girls
may look shorter in them, but the
men look longer.
Frank Knowles, ertwhile light
weight champion mit-sHnger of South
Georgia, dropped into our boudoir
Sunday A. M. and imparted to us the
information that “the fairer sex is
condemning boxing at the present on
account of its brutality, but I like
the' prise-ring . a darn sight better
than the wadding ring.” Come again,
Franklin.
