Whatever the motive,
however, it was e grave mistake.
Mercer does'not have the fine beau
tiful buildings that grace the cam
puses of so many modern universities,
Mercer does not have the millions
with which to attract the attention of
the. world. But Mercer dees have a
faculty, composed of men just as great
and illustrious as that of any othar
college, anywhere. To the freshman,
the presence of those men of learning,
creates anything else but “an atmos
phere of stiffness and feeling of. be
ing policed.” That semi-circle of hoary
headed scholars facing him daily rep
resent as much Inspiration to fight on,
as the noble traditions which are eoa-
nected with the rostrum itself.
It might be added, if faculty mem
bers by appearing on the platform
tend in any way to aatabllah I discip
linary atmosphere during the chapel
exercises, Dr. Weaver should by all
means urge every member to be pres
ent every day. Uniass’ Mr. Cobb pro
