just two hours’and fifteen minutes
before the Freshman edition of the
Cluster was scheduled to go to preu,
as though the fates had smiled upon
the' First Year Men in their efforts to
edit a real, college paper, the biggest
story of the year broke when Freak
. man Howard Greene was notified by
Western Union that his radio inven
tion submitted to the Atwater Kent
Company in Philadelphia, had proved
a tremendous success.
Coincident with the telegntm. tp
Freshman Greene, Associated Press
and International News. Service dis
patches were received by both the Ma
con papers declaring the "undergrad
uate of Mercer University, who has
studied .under Dr. P H. Craig, noted
radio scientist, to have startled some
of the greatest electrical engineers in
the world by his simple discovery.”
It all sounds like a fairy tale. But
as W. T. Anderson, editor of the Tele
graph, stated in discussing the mirac
ulous success of the young genius,
"great things often come from those
from, whom we least expect them."
The telegram from the Atwater Kent
Company, recognized .as one of the
greatest in the radio field, read brief
ly: "Our engineers interested in your
variocoupler stop Mr. Henry Ernstine,
Our representative, is leaving today
for Macon to consult you stop Sug
gest immediate steps for patent.”
The first one on the Mercer campus,
to learn of the Freshman’s good for
tune, was Dr. A. P. Montague, his in
structor in Livy, to whom Greene first
showed the telegram. Dr. Montague
immediately got in touch with Dr.
Craig, who warmly congratulated the
yonng map. Dr. Craig later an
nounced that the newspaper reports to
the effect that Freshman Greene Was
one of his students, were wrong and
“that he had not in any way . helped
the young inventor oh his discovery'”.
The device was said to be the “simp
lest thing you could think of” by
Freshman Greene, who modestly re
fused to even consider it anything
great: “Just why somebody has not
though of it before, I can’t under i
stand”.he said as he shook hands with
bis class mates, congratulating him
upon his- success. .
"I just got to' thinking about it after
Dr. Craig introduced his invention and
I just couldn't get it off my rnihd and
so I built a small set and it worked. I

didn't want everybody laughing at the
if I could do anything with it so I Just
sent it to my unde, who is with the At
water people, and they seenf to be a
little interested iiwit."
“Just how much do you think it will
be worth?” he was asked by one of his
friends standing breathlessly at his
side.
“You all know as much as I do”,
Greene answered, evidently desiring to
dodge the issue. ' ' •
Being asked upon what principle his
invention is based, Greene ’ hesitated
but finally described it when' told that
the editor of his class edition of the
Cluster needed the information for a
feature story. >-
"I don’t suppose it will make any
difference”, he said, “if I don't ’ tell
anybody about it except the boys at
Mercer. When D;, Craig made such
a ■ success with his invention I took
up where he left off. You see, instead
of supplying bismuth to the sensitive
plates of the condenser like he did in
order to do away with the tubes and
batteries, I supplied calomel and did
away With everything." ...
