Bruins Split Last

Coach Claude Smith’s Bruin diamondmcn took the first jjame of a
double-header with North Georgia last wee.k by a score of 11-0, hut
fell to the Cadets in the, nightcap K-2, as the Bears wound up the season
recently at Willingham Field.
M' CLUB ELECTS
Bobby Pinkston was elected presi
dent of the M’ club for the 1955-
1950 school year in a meeting
Thursday morning. Elliott Brack is
the new vice-president and Linton
Baggs, secretary-treasurer.
The group will have a party
Saturday night, May 28, at Houston
Lake for the
dates.
Righthander Frank Worthy
threw a near-perfect hall game at
the North Georgians in the first
tilt, allowing no runs and only one
scratch single. Worthy faced 24
batters, giving up only two walks
and striking out four Cadets.
In the second game the hoys
from ltahlonega turned the tables
on the Bears and went on to win on
the strong arm of Dub Cobb. Cobh
gave up only two hits ami struck
out seven.

55 All Stars
At the annual-Honors Day pro
gram the all-star teams were an
nounced for womens athletics by
WAA. Those on the vollyball team
are Helen Faulkner, Maxine Hunt.
Peggy Carlisle, Chi Omega; Joyce
Platt, Carolyn Hayes. I ouise Bran-
sford, MICA; Joanne Gilder. Phi
Mu; and Betty Holland, Alpha Del
ta Pi.
The basketball team i- made up
of Charlotte Mize. Louise Brans-
ford, Mary Ann Clegg, MICA; Jo
anne Gilder. Carol Cobh, Phi Mu;
Helen Faulkner, Janette Hodges,
Maxine Hunt, Rose Fietwell, • hi
Omega.
Those on the softball team are
Barbara Bryant, Alpha Delta Pi;

Trophies were awarded to tin
winning teams of each spoil by
WAA at the same time. The tennis,
freethrow, softball, and badminton
went to (hi Omega. MICA won
volleyball and basketball.

Peggy Carlisle, Betty Holland, and
Betty Puckett won the senior a
wards.

Sigma Nu copped the 19ftIn
tramural Horseshoes champion-
hy topping Phi I>elta Theta, winner
of second place, and MIMA, who
finished third.
All three teams had finished the
season with an identical 7-1 win-
loss record. A double elimination
tournament was held, and the Sig
ma Nu Snakes took the title.
Sigma Nu won the opening round
over MIMA, and then defeated the
Phi Delta. Phi Delta Theta put MI
MA out of the running by topping
them In the final match. Sigma
Nu won over the Phi Delta for the
championship.
Pitching for Sigma Nn were
Duane Akin and Jimmy Carnes,
while Fran Riviere and Bobby
Brown tossed for the Phi Delta.

the losing pitcher for North Geor
gia, got into trouble from the open
ing pitch. Two hits and five liases
on balls gave Mercer five runs to
work with in the first inning and
the Bears kept pouring it on. scor
ing five runs off Bullard before he
was relieved by Alexander.
Batting honors for the day go to
Mercer's Captain, Tommy Mixon.
Mixon had a perfect day at the bat
in the first contest getting two for
two and scoring three runs. Mix
oil's two hits boomed off his bat
beading for the fences.
In the second inning Mixon blast
ed one of Bullard's pitches deep into
right-center field for a home run.
With the bases loaded in the third
inning, Mixon did all that was asked
of him and promptly unloaded the
sacks with a tremendous drive to
left center for another homer.
Fast week's doubleheader brought
a close to the Bear's baseball sea
son ami left the Mercer nine with
a 11-is record.

Championship
Phi Delta Theta took its fourth
-tiaight intramural softball crown
this season, by winning eight
straight games, ami losing none.
The Phi Delts now hold two legs
Pn the current softball trophy. To
gain permanent possession of in
tramural trophies, an organization
must win the title three times.
Second in the race was Kappa
Sigma with a f»-2 record.
Three teams finished the season'
tied for third place, AT(), K A, and
MIMA. And three teams also tied
f u the next place with a J-5 re
cord. These are the Ministers, SAE
and Lambda Phi.

PMu's Initiate Two
Two new sisters were recently in
itiated into Flu Mu. They are An.
driette Bouchellc of Social Circle
and I.aquita Withrow ..f Greens
boro.
Open house was held by the Phi
Mu’s April IT for parents and fa
tuity. Refreshments wen served
and everyone had a very pleasant
time.
Formal pledge service was held
for Virginia Bell, of Madison, on
April 21.
Mixon is Outstanding
Mercer Athlete for 55
Tommy Mixon has been awarded the Pettier Trophy for the Out
standing Athlete of the Mercer Student Body foi 1 954-55. The award
members and their * s donated each year by the Peeler Hardware Company of Macon. The
Mercer student body votes in chapel on this award.
Mixon has re written the Mei * r
record book in basketball this past
season, by scoring more points
than any other player in Men erV
history. He also this year set the
individual game scoring mart: and
the game free throw mark.
On the baseball team this
spring, Mixon was second in team
batting, He played the short'top
position.
Mixon has been a member of
both the varsity basketball and
baseball teams all four years he
has been at Mercer.
At the end of the basketball seas
on, Mixon was drafted by the Fort
Wayne Pistons of the National

Basketball Association to play pro
fessional basketball. He has signed
with this club.
Recently it was announced that
Mixon had also signed to play pro
baseball with the Brooklyn Dod
gers farm sv. tern this summer. Up
on graduation from Mercer, he will
be assigned to the Asheville, club of
the class “B” Tri-State League.

SAE's Hold Fish Fry
The annual SAE fish fry was
held recently at the SAE lodge. Thu
seniors of the Lanier Senior (jigh
School for Boys were the honored
guests at the annual e\ent. Clunk
Haffenden provided the entertain
ment for the evening.
Tommy Deal was named the out
standing pledge of the year. 1954-
55, at this time.
