Bears End Year
With GTC Win
The Mercer Beer baseball team finished the 1956 season with a 7-4
win over the Professors of Georgia State Teachers College last Monday.
The tilt was held at Willingham field
Bud Culbreth hurled for Mercer
and was relieved by Carl Gunter
late in the game.
GTC took the field first and
went down in order.
Billy Smith lead off for Mercer
with a walk and scored on a wild
tnrow to firs*. Kinslow got on base
and Lisle was tossed out on a field
er’s choice. Bud Culbreth popped to
short. Billy Lee singled and was
followed by Red Harrelson who
homered to right field to bring in
three runs and make the score Mer
cer 4, Teachers 0.
GTC scored one run in their half
of the second.' Berryhill and Powell
singled and Berryhill scored on a
fielder’s choice.
The Bears came back in their
half of the second frame to score
two more runs. Pinkston was safe
on an error and Ken Crane sacri
ficed him to second. Billy Smith
grounded to first and Kinslow walk
ed and stole second. Lisle walked
to fill the bases and pitcher Cul-
berth singled in the two runs.
Neither team scored until the
first of the fifth when GTC collect
ed three runs on two hits.

scored one in their half of the
seventh as I/eo walked, Harrelson
singled, and Lee score on a misplay
by the Professor’s infield. Pinkston
poped up to end the inning.
The Bears finished the season
with a 16-4 record which is the
best record for the basebaliers in
several years.

Looking 'Em Over
Another athletic year has rolled by finding ole Mercer
up with the best of them. Although the Bears have not yet
subsidized it’s athletes, we manage to maintain the respect
of some of the big ’uns. A salute goes to the coaching staff for
another bang-up job.

As the intramural season ends, we find the Phi Delts
winning the all intramural trophy for the second straight
year.

This intramural season has been one of the best. The top
four teams in each sport have been very closely matched.

The Bears are losing many men via graduation. Here’s
hoping some top notch athlete will find their way to the Mer
cer campus to help keep up the Mercer tradition of “giant
killers”.

Lose to Emory
The Mercer Bears dropped their
last match of the season to the
nctman of Emory University Mon
day afternoon on Mercer’s clay
courts. The final score was 5-4. The
Bears had beaten the Emory squad
by the same score earlier in the
year.
Buddy Moore and Carter Smith
accounted for three of the four
Mercer points, winning their single
matches and teaming up to take
the number one doubles.
Mercer’s Malvern Brown and
Emory’s Willie Webb battled
through a hard match with Brown
finally winning 4-6, 8-6, 9-7.
Moore easily beat Emory’s John
Loudermilk, 6-0, 6-2, and Smith won
from Jim Griffin of Emory, 8-6,
8-6. Moore and Smith won their
doubles match 6-1, 6-1.
The Bruins ended the season
with a 4-7 record.

Gen. Ranck
Visits ROTC
Ceremonies
Brigadier-General Joseph K.
Ranck, commanding general of the
Atlanta General Depot, was a guest
at the annual Mercer University
ROTC Day ceremonies Wednesday.
General Ranck, a native of Pen
nsylvania, graduated from Lan
caster Boys High School in 1923
and attended Franklin and Mar
shall College in 1924.
He received an appointment to
the United States Military Aca
demy in July, 1925. Upon gradua
tion in 1929, he received a commis-
mission as second lieutenant in the
Cavalry and served at various sta
tions throughout the west and
southwest until 1940, when ne was
transferred to the Quartermaster
Corps.
During World War II and the
Korean conflict, General Ranck
held important positions in the
Caribbean area, Far East Command
and Korea.
The General is a graduate of the
Command and General Staff Col
lege, Armed Forces Staff College
and the National War College.
Prior to assuming command of
the Atlanta General Depot in April
ol 1956, General Ranck was the
Commanding General of Fort
Worth Quartermaster Depot, Fort
Worth, Tex.

Bear Speedsters Take
Last Match of Season
Mercer’s tricksters captured
eight firsts and tied for another to
dtfeat the Howard Bulldogs 72-59
at Porter Stadium Saturday after
noon.
Big Hugh Hodges captured scor
ing honors for the day with 13
points. Hugh won a first in the
sliol put and discus and placed sec
ond in the broad jump. Linton
Buggs collected 1U points for the
viclorous Bears as be won the 11H)
and 220 yard dashes.
Royce Ballard was high for the
Buliuogs as he scored 11 points.

jump and placed third in the discus.
Lamar Cason won the thvo-mile
run in lu minutes and 54 seconds,
lus best run of the year, to round
out tils college career on the cinder
path.
Buddy Moore, of Mercer tennis
fame, ran the mile for the first
nine placing second. Moore was
scarcely beaten by Howard’s Henry
Byx as the more experienced Syx
overtook Buddy on the last turn.

Kappa Sigma reigns as intramural softball champions of Mercer
University, the Iialernity won this title witn a 40 victory over Alpha

Xbe game was a tremendous pitching duel between Graham of the

inning go by witnout a score. Alu threatened to score in tbe lotirth

ludowed with a single to lelt. Mommand pupped to Grabam, however,
and Vainer hit into a double play to retire tbe side. There were no
more threats by either team until tbe sixth when ixappa Sigma scored
lour runs.
Lehman Lindsey was the first man up in the last of the sixth.
After taking ope pilch, Lindsey clouted a tremendous home run over
the left lield fence and scored the first run of the game. Hudson retired
Green and Graham but then walked Brigman. Bngtnan advanced to
second on a passed ball and scored when Dubs singled to center. Fuchs
followed with another single and Dubs scored when ’’Stinky” Dawson
let the ball get past him. Fuchs went to third on the play. Jones then
popped a high fly to right field but Childs dropped the bail and Fuchs
came in to score. Cole lined to second to end the inning.
The ATO’s went down without a hit in the seventh and the game
was over. Bobby Graham emerged the winning pitcher. He allowed only
three hits to the Taus, walked four, and struck out two. Hudson was
the losing pitcher. He allowed only one earned run, but gave up five
bits. Hudson walked three and struck out four.
Dubs led hiters on both teams with two hits in three trips. Lindsey,
Graham, and Fuchs got one hit each for Kappa Sigma. Bishop, Childs,
and Varner had one hit each for ATO.
