BEAR TAILS

It Menu ax If another year 'if the rutting program Iihh crossed
the finish line without the pushball game becoming h reality I have
not. aa yet. been able to find out lust why this Important part of the
ratting program was omniltted. Maybe the freshmen just derided they
did not want to have a pushball game they seemed to have had the
upper hand at Rat Court. I hope that the spirit they displayed last
Thuraday, October 11, will still be with them next year when It la their
turn to direct the ratting program
"Without spirit, cheerfulness, or courage; dejected, dead"— thia
is the definition of the word spiritless and also an apt description of
many of the Tatnall Tech students
School spirit is not something that can be drilled into our heads
or rained upon us unexpectedly. It Is something that we must make.
Becauae we do not nave a fobtball team Is no excuse. We have good
baaketbali and baseball teams. The prospect for our tennis team is
the brlghest in years What about the Intramural teams’ Our intramural
program has been broadened this year and I believe that It will turn
out to be one of the best.
Fellows, where were jou the first part of this week! The gals
started their Intramural program with the tenuis matches. Mot only
were the courts full of beauties, hut the “grandstand" where the specta
tors sat was truly a Miss American pagent. Kermuda shorts were la order.
Sure missed a swell lime men, even l oach Mayfield was there.
To be serious for a moment, though, the Intramural program has
Just started and it needs the support of every student
The men’s intramural football began this week and the rooting
sections were sadly lacking in some of the more powerful voices. Sure
hope that we see them present during the coming days.
This la a good time to get your voice in shape for the varsity
sports that will begin in the near future.
Don’t hide behind some excuse and not attend the games. Come
out and oee If you are not surprised at the amount of school spirit that
we can generate. I^d's show the freahmen that the new fad Is not
“cynical apathy toward emotional school spirit," We hold the power
in our hands to change Mercer from a spiritless school to one that
Is on fire with spirit, courage, and life.

Dr. David Johnston, Mercer
biology instructor will read a paper
on the spring migration of birds in
the Macon area for the Georgia
Ornithological Society this week
end.
The group will hold its 2nd An
niversary annual meeting at Sa
vannah Beach today, tomorrow and
Sunday.
Accompanying Dr. Johnston, who
Is editor of the groupa quarterly
publication The IlfMe, wlU he Mr.
T P. Haines of the biology depart
ment. Dr. Benjamin S. Meeks of the
chemistry department and a tad amt
Clint Doss.
When I first arrived on the scenic Mercer campi I went straight
to the friendly Dean’s office. On the way over a convertible with a
fraternity sticker ran over me. "Just a flesh wound," 1 said to a group
of laughing spectators that crowded around.""
Pulling myself together as well as I could. 1 skipped gaily over
to consult with the Dean.
On the way in the Ad Building I was met by a smiling upperclassman
"My name is Hugo McCrunch and I'm an upperclassman," he said.
"I'm Willard Cluthchmyer,” I said, making a low curtsev
" Rat," he said. “1 have a few things here that all freshmen arc-
required to buy."
lie sold me a cellophane identification card, a rat cap, a subscrip
tion to the Cluster, a map of the campus and a chapel seat. All for *6.00'.
I told hint I was a transfer student from Abraham Baldwin hut he
didn’t seem to mind.
Breathlessly J rushed into the building and went directly in tip-
office of Dean Shaft. His secretary motioned me to a seat and after
a short three hour wait I w as told to go In.
Dean Shaft was a nice little man. He was about four fis t Uwnn
weighed about 80 lbs. and had a handlebar mustache, which he cunningly
twirled throughout our conveiHutiou.
He was dressed in the very latest fashion for college professors;
three-buttoned shiny blue serge suit, fni.ved shirt, spotted Do, celluloid
collar, and gray spats. Impecahle.
"Son," he said, patting his shoulder holster. "I want you to know
from the start that 1 am your friend
I licked his hand gratefully.
“Now 1 know," he smiled, rubbing his pet boa constrictor play
fully, "that you arc a transfer Btudent, and we, here at Mercer try t >
do right by you fellows.’"
“You earned 46 hours credit at Abraham Baldwin and wye have
derided to let you transfer 6 of those!!”
1 was overwhelmed. I had to take Engllak. physics, and animal
husbandry over but he lei me keep those five hard-earned Honrs In
underwater basketweaving. Ecstasy was mine!!
"Now", be said, "I will assist you In choosing the proper courses
for your first year of study here”
"You realise," he aaid as he applied a generous splash of Neatsfoot
oil to hla glistening black bullwhlp. “that I feel like a father to all you
boys and want you to get the most out of your college education."
"When you graduate from Mercer," he continued, “you will be able
to answer easily such pertinent questions as; ‘When Is the mating
Mansi for the North Utah red thrasher,’ ‘What are the measurements of
the average home economic* major at Wesleyan,’ ‘Who was the captain
uf the fiJU'.W. learn that beat Mercer In water polo In 1913’, etc."
Overcome by the comparison of what 1 would be, with what I now
am. 1 stumbled blindly out of his office into this new and wonderful
world of higher education with a firm and resolute will.
