THK CAVE DWELLERS by William Saroyan is scheduled for
presentation by the Mercer Players on May IT and IS
The theme of this play is love with a capital I. One might well
ash. after all that has been said and written about love, alter all that
has been committed and exploited in the name of love, and since
everyone who has ever lived has ex|ierienced either its pleasures or its
ravages or Ixith. what more could possibly be said concerning its
somewhat elusive nature?
Evidently Mr Saroyan thinks
there is still something left to lie
said on the subject, and 1 am cer
tainly not one fo quibble with him
on this [xiiiit. After all though, who
can truthfully say that everyone
lines everyone else, even in a
group that is limited to only a lew
l>eoplc.
Yet this is exactly what Mr.
Saroyan tries to show in his play.
The play is concerned with a group
of people who exhibit diverse char
acteristics and temperaments, and
yet all somehow miracuously man
age to sincerely love one another.
There are. just to name a few of
the more outstanding characters, a
queen, a duke, a clown, and a prize
fighter. along with a hodge-podge
of other diameters that range
from a Silent Bov to a Dumb Boy.
with even a dog and a hear getting
in on the act. All of these people
live in a deserted theater, anil it is
here that they live and love - - vir
tually hiving, us it were, without
ceasing.
Anil thus this noble drama goes.
Ami one always seems to hear the
author speaking through his char
aeters. the well known adage: Live,
and if mil live fully and deeply,
you will love as deeply, as well.
