The People's Choice
Novwpbar third will be the time for all Americans to come to the
d at flteir country and vote. This time, tor the first time in many
rotione, there it a dear and definite choice which tame the voter,
i is no “me tooiet” candidate running or one who is pushing the
tmuea asthe other candidate. We have an individual, tree-thinking
d detending ot peace, the pursuit of happiness. Justice, and indhrid-
ilism in the OOP's candidate, Senator Barry Gold water
Yes, 1 too, have read so many

Even if my candidate. Senator

Men't even claim to have one.
The Democrats claim they are
a a free America; and yet, why is
that full facte pertaining to the
laker case are unknown to the
nMic? Censorship, my friends,
■worship. Security in the govern
ment has become so lax in the last
few years that a morals charge of
1960 by one of Johnson's top aides
was cast aside, and ha was . given
a top security rating. Scandal seems
to be one of Johnson's three middle
names because a fellow Texan, Mr.
Eatea, was involved in a tre
mendously big racket a few years
ago, and the facts to that case are
still unknown to the public. Billy
Sol Estes is still free; Bobby Baker
is still free; and only one man, Mr.
Jenkins, has had to suffer the
consequencies because of his fail
ings. But this is election year, and
LBJ must not do anything to hurt
his public image. People would
frown (if Jenkins were permitted to
remain undetected, end LBJ would
lose those few votes he has. Yes,
LBJ—Lyndon, Baker, and Jenkins
—and other scandals as yet unseen!
This is a very important election
year, and we, the people of the
United States of America, must
fight with our votes to keep Amer
ica free, a land of liberty, the home
of the brave, end most important
of all, to keep American in the
highest tradition ... a name
spected and loved by all the world.
My friends, vote in this election
and vote Barry Goldwater, the
people’s choice in 1964. In your
heart you know he’s right!

A View Of The U. N.
By Bdrneid Lindtoy
In hie column Oct 16, ex-Young Republican John Lough demon
strated once again his imperfect understanding of conservatism and
Senator Goldwater. Since be seems unable to comprehend our views on
the United Nations, end since he may have confused his readers, 1 have
decided to address myself in this column to a discussion of that organi
sation. I wish to make it dear, however, that an indispensable requisite
to any intelligent discussion of the UN is the abandonment of the no
tion that that body is some '•acred cow which must never, never, ever,
ever, be examined or criticized, but instead must be regarded as a fixed
star on some vague horizon of Truth which includes other *uch gods
aa TV A and Social Security. John states that it 'shocks' him ‘to the com’
that anyone would advocate our withdrawal from the UN, but what
shocks me to the core is his readiness to accept it without a thorough
and careful examination of its functional and dysfunctional qualities
insofar as our interests are concerned.
John informed us that on Oct. 19, 1963, Sen. Goldwater said, ‘I
have advocated withdrawal (from the UN) in the past. And at best I’m
lukewarm about the UN now’. Then on July 11, 1964, he said, ‘I’ve never
advocated withdrawing from the United Nations; in fact. I’ve given more
support to it than have some of my critics’. These two statements are
not contradictory but in fact clarify and supplement one another when
viewed in their proper context. In the two statements cited above Gold-
water was referring to 1) the UN in its present form and context and 2)
the concept of the UN. Thus it is that he has advocated withdrawal from
the UN in definition (1) and has never advocated withdrawal from the
UN in definition (2) Other alleged contradictions and startling state
ments can be explained similarly when viewed within their particular
context and with an open mind. Aa is the case with moat other complex
subjects, one cannot understand Sen. Goldwater if he is determined
not to. Now here are our specific objections to the UN in its present
form and context and our incomplete plans for the concept from which
it evolved.
1. The U. S., one nation of 120
in the UN, is required to pay 33%
of its operating costs. When all the
special assessments are taken into
consideration, the U. S. winds up
paying 48% plus housing the or
ganization in New York City rent
free. Now it is true that we are the
richest nation in the world and
that one should pay according to
his ability to pay, but 48% plus
rent is a little steep, to say the
least Other countries should be
come sware of their obligations,
and our doing for them what they
should be doing for themselves
will not help make them more re
sponsible.
2. As J. Edgar Hoover has point
ed out, the Red embassy in Wash
ington and the Communist contin
gent to the UN in New York are
the chief spawning grounds for Red
spies in this country. The UN does
not make the work of the FBI any
easier.
3 If the Reds are going to abuse
their privilege of attendance at the
UN as in objection No. 2, they
should be kicked out Another ex
ample of their unwillingness to
cooperate is their failure to pay up
even the very small share of the
operating costs assigned to them.
This is true of France and several
other non - Communist countries al
so, but the Communist block is re
sponsible for most of this delin
quency in payments. Much of the

is not in military strength or eco
nomic power that America's hope
lies, it is in you—the youth of
America.” Urging the love and
support of country, he added,
"America is the [dace for you to
fight for freedom.”
In dosing, he used a quotation
from Cicero in 36 B.C. which help
ed save Rome in crisis: “Extrem
ism in the pursuit ol liberty is no
vice; moderation in the pursuit of
justice is no virtue.”
misunderstanding among the na
tions of the UN can be explained
by social and cultural differences,
but the violation of signed treaties
cannot be dismissed with such
4. If nothing else, the UN might
be a useful forum for debate. But
instead the Red Huns seem bent on
using it to propagate Communism,
yhe UN gives them a respectable
context in which to peddle their
wares, which they do not hesitate
to do, unlike ourselves.
6. The stated goal of the UN is
“peace with freedom.” This is the
equivalent of saying that the UN
has no goals, for its members all
have radically different concep
tions of what peace and freedom
mean. The Russians do not hesi
tate to inform us that to them a
world of “peace with freedom” is
a world run under Communism.
Now as far as we are concerned
there is nothing united about the
nations in the United Nations.
Their goals are incompatible. The
goal of the Goldwater movement
(and we are not even represented
in that body) is total victory over
Communism and all other forms of
totalitarianism. Participation in the
UN diverts our nation from that
goal. And we are not willing to sit
by in the name of peace and coexis
tence and see our hopes for a bet
ter world go down the red drain
of the old, false, and mistaken no
tion that government is the solution
