THE MERCER CLUSTER
April 7, 1966
With Tom Lang
•••
The Bruin baseball schedule has added much to the dull after
noons, and students seem to he motivated to see the games either for a
tan. or for the sheer enjoyment of the sport. Thus far, the Bears are
holding on to quite an impressive record, at 4 wins and no losses.
In passing conversation with Coach Smith, he has a subtle confi
dence in his team, but will not openly show it. The "Red Dog" said
that the jiercentages would probably catch up to him, and he's still
sticking to the pre-season statement that the team will be doing fine
if they break even He made mention of the strong Wheaton College
team, hut the same was made of the "strong" Valdosta team, which the
Bears top|>ed 2-1 last week.
Ed Ring, the team's manager seems to be the gung ho' spokesman
for the Bears, and is quite Confident that the team will have an enviable
record. He stated that this year's team looks far superior to that
of last year.
Mercer's tennis team is not sitting in the shadows of the baseball
happenings, as the Bear netters have a 2-2 season, taking wins over
North Georgia, and Florida Presbyterian, while dropping decisions to
Florida Southern and Tam|>a. The team has approximately ten on the
roster, and are looking for a winning season.

Lo Awaken! ! Mercer has a golf team. How 'bout that? They are
even the unofficial state champs of last year. The Mercer golf team
has been part of the athletics department since 1952, and according
to Zeb Vance, their coach, they've had winning seasons most every
year. The team is now in the midst of a settling down stage, adding a
few new members and are looking for more pros every day.
The golf publicity has been scarce in past years, and there has
been no apparent reason for this slighting other than ignorance and no
interest. I think that any asset to the University should be recognized
and praised.
Coach Vance would like all golf enthusiasts to see him as soon as
IMissible if they are interested in joining the ranks of the team. The
team faces Wofford in the near future, and will need all the support
they can get. The Wofford team recently posted a 30Vfc-3*4 win over

The Reliels were rated as being
tough, coming into Tuesday's game
with a strong 9-1 record, and also
having three straight victories over
Georgia Tech under their belts.
Coach Claude Smith expressed a
bit of weariness before the game,
wishing that the Bears could have
had more ex|>erience before playing
such a strong team, but as the
game turned out. the Bruins swept
to victory number two. against no
losses.
The Retiels filled up the hags in
the fourth inning on walks and er
rors but Waters bore down and re
tired the side with a cool head.
The lone Valdosta run came in
the first inning when Claude
S[>eek, their first batter, drew a
walk, stole second, and then came
home when the try to put him out
at second went into center field.
The Bears tier! the game at 1-1
when Jack Manton belted a single
in the third, bringing Chuck Og-
burn around from second in to
score.
The winning run came in the
fifth inning when Ogburn singled,
and Manton again belted the ball,
this time for a double, bringing in
Ogburn for the winning margin.
In winning, Waters fanned 10
Valdosta batters, and walked five.
His accuracy strengthened as the
game wore on, and after the fourth
inning, only one Reb managed to
make it to first.
