ALPHA GAMMA DELTA
Freshman Week brought several
honors to the Alpha Gams. In the
Freshman Talent show, Sarah
Hackney tied for first place and
Babs Barkley won third (dace. In
the beauty contest, Faye Bumby
was one of the five finalists for Mias
Freshman. This e* weekend
brought two more wonderful sur
prise# to Alpha Gamma Delta—Sa
rah Hackney was chosen promisee
sweetheart for A TO, and Joanne
Pinner was elected promisee sweet
heart for Pi Kappa Phi. All in all
it was a wonderful week for the
Alpha Gams.
MICA.
After an ambitious two weeks of
parties which took them “around
the world” from Hawaii to Egypt
to arrive safely home again in the
Old South, Mercer’s Independent
Coeds welcomed 21 potential mem
bers with a banquet for Sisters,
Pledges, and promisees at Had
dens on Thursday, October 6.

Beauchamp, Pensacola, Fla.; Way

Congratulations to the lucky girls
who chose Independence I Con
gratulations also are due to several
of the sisters: Fall quarter brought
Catherine Jarrett back from Cher
okee, North Carolina where she
worked with B.S.U.’ers from Geor
gia building a church for the In
dians there as well as other sum
mer mission duties. Diana Denton
returned from Yale, where she was
one of 100 students in the Harvard
Yale-Columbia Intensive Summer
Studies Program. Laurie Shalley
did not return to Mercer—she is
now Mrs. Beauries Thompson of
Augusta. MICA Alum Carol Ann
Holcombe has a position teaching
in an Alaskan outpost school. Carol
Ann says it’s fun, but so different
from Mercer.
Nor has fall quarter thus far been
totally dedicated to rush: Linda
Smith was elected Secretary of
Women’s Student Government,
Cheryl White wears the MIMA pin
of Bill Parrish, and Bea Middleton
recently gained the badge of MIMA
president Everett Coker. Diana
Denton is one of the nominees for
the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship.
Promisee Carole Bishop was a
candidate for Freshman Secretary,
and Diane Eubanks and Dee Mc
Arthur represented MICA in
Thursday night’s beauty contest.
Within the chapter itself there is
new furniture and some new offi
cers. Fall elections gave offices to:
Chaplain—Linda Smith; Corre
sponding Secretary—Diana Den
ton; WSGA Quarterly Represent
stive—Jeanne Murphy; and WSGA
Yearly Representative — Sherrill
Jones.
There are plans afoot for a "Har
vest Moon" party early in Novem
her and for many new trophies for
the already-filled shelves of the
trophy cabinet.
