FRATERNITIES
"Only at Mercer.” This truism
sums up the traditions and paradox
that makes thia “place” so unique.
Is there another college campus
with such completely incompetible
architecture in such a completely
compatible combination ? Confus
ing ? Of course it is. It waa planned
that way. Pert of thia planned tra
dition and uniqueness that ia
Mercer is found in those Christian,
hell-raising, rowdy, scholarly, abo
minable, character-building, idealis
tic social organizations. I won’t
attempt to debate the merits and
demerits of fraternities, since I am
obviously prejudiced on the subject.
The administration and the I.F.C.
seem to be adequately involved in
thia question.
"Only at Mercer” would the city
police try to arrest an entire
fraternity for returning a borrowed
piano. Doesn't the Police Depart
ment know that you “can’t go no
straighter than Phi Delta Theta."
The Phi Delta will have to win the
Planned Pandemonium Award for
the first half of the quarter. The
E’s, however, must rate a close
second for this illustrious honor.
Is it true that the Macon Fire De
partment was called by Middle
Georgia’s most reknown crime
fighters, the Macon Police, in order
to put out a burning lion? Chalk
up one more for the cops! “Only
at Mercer.”
The Kappa Sigs and the Sigma
Nus have an unusually “warm”
relationship between them which
dates back to the ’65 football
championship. Have you walked
down Fraternity Row (you can’t
drive down it, you know) and seen
the location of the Sigma Nu and
Kappa Sig lodges. Now I ask you,
is that a completely compatible
situation? ... Of course not, it
waa planned that way. Who was it
who said that fences make good
neighbors? That is particularly
true since glass is hard to patch.
The K.A.’a win the award for
being the sharpest fraternity on
campus lately. This group is as
sharp as .a tack. Have you ever
noticed haw a tack can deflate a
hag of wind. Do you remember
those little announcements urging
all to come see the Leos put a
hurting on the Rebels? Well, those
signs were actually made by the
K.A.'s who wanted to make the
humble E’s look conceited. It was
planned that way. Someone should
reprimand the K-A.’s.
Those “men of the creek,” the
A.T.O.’s continue to maintain a
firm hold on the campus political
situation. The Number 1 and Num
ber 2 freshmen class offices fell
to the Tau’s. This was no accident;
it was planned that way. The
A.T.O.’s have had a very successful
football season — any time the
oysters put a blemish on the snakes
it’s been a good season.
The Pi Kappa Phi’s have already
made their presence known on
campus. Have you heard that little
ditty about the “raiders of the
night?” It’s quite catchy. Speak
ing of catchy, my spies and inform
ers tell me that several of Lambda
Chi’s promissees are out to catch
their Big Sisters. After all, what's
two or three years difference in
sge? It waa planned that way,
wasn’t it?
