6 • THE MERCER CLUSTER
January 27,
BEARS NOW 9-1, FACE TECH
By Art Hapner
After loading 53-52 at the half,
Mercer fought hard in the final
period to hold off a fine Georgia
Southern team, which nevertheless
surged forth to down the Bears
105-96 in the closing moments.
With their only loss against seven
wins the Bears returned home last
Saturday night to roll over Rollins
83 72. pushing the record to a
remarkable 8-1.
Next, the mighty Bears tackled
the Georgia Southwestern Hurri
canes, who replaced Carson-New-
man on the schedule. The Hurri
canes took the opening tip and
quickly scored two. The lead
changed hands for the next few
minutes; then with four minutes
gone in the first period Mercer
took the lead and stayed in front
the rest of the night. At the half
the score was 52-25. The game
picked up in the final period for
Southwestern behind the able
shooting of Allen Brouwer, Fred
Smith, and Chris Brown, but the
Bears were too much for the vis
itors. Steve Moody, showing his
record breaking rebounding style,
cleared the boards time after time,
also managed to drop in ten points.
True to form were Jud Roberts
and Robert Belloir, the two quick
guards of this fine team, ringing
24 and 19 points respectively. Also
in the spotlight were Tom Mitchell
scoring 13 and Walter Chandler
with 11. The final score was 96-61
— a slow night for the Bears.
Saturday night (January 28) the
Bears are at Tampa and then
Monday (January 30) the Big
Game with Georgia Tech.

Introducing Mercer’s
Cheerleaders
Cheerleaders are an essential in
gredient to the backetball tradition
at Mercer. The squad is composed
of six Varsity and four Junior
Varsity members, chosen at the be
ginning of each school year. Along
with their ability to arouse en
thusiasm, the girls must maintain a
“C" average to remain on the
squad. Led this year by varsity
co-captains Cindy Clayton and
Sandra Rich, and Junior Varsity
captain Susan Strange, the cheer
leaders are responsible for leading
Mercer's growing spirit, during
school and on the court.
Cindy is a Sophomore from Or
lando, Florida. With six years of
cheering experience behind her, she
is an asset to the squad. Although
Cindy enjoys cheering, it is not the
only activity in which she partici
pates. Recently elected, she holds
the treasurer’s office of Alpha
Delta Pi, and with a Math major
and Spanosh minor, she finds little
free time. When asked about Mer
cer's school spirit, she commented.
"Mercer's spirit has greatly in
creased since last year. With con
tinuing support of our great team,
we should hive a season's record
of 20-1.”
Sandra Rich is also a Sophomore
from Orlando Florida and shares
the same cheerleading experience
as Cindy. She is, in her other
activities, a member of the Mercer
Honor Committee. Rush Chairman
for Alpha Delta Pi. and SAE Little
Sister of Minerva. Sandra's cur
rent study is in sociology toward
a teaching career.
The whole squad would like to
thank you all for your support,
and urge continued support in the
future. Remember the game Mon
day, January 30 — Mercer v. Geor
gia Tech — Tickets are now on
sale. Next week, cheerleaders Dari
Ripley and Susan Strange will be
featured.

RETROSPECT
(Continued from page 5)
It was also the year of the ac
cessory with a message; legal
buttons sounded the sentiments of
the moment. Campus wits more
buttons proclaiming “Hire the
morally handicapped," or “Custer
died for your sins." Then there was
the button that read, “God is not
dead; He just doesn't want to get
involved.”
Aral was God dead? If he were,
the controversy over His demise
generated almost enough heat to
assure a second coming.
Like God, folk music went under
ground, and a new, homogenized
sound — folk rock — rose to the
surface. Enter musical groups with
bizarre names and bizarre but often
beautiful sounds, like the Mamas
and Papas. Simon and Garfunkel.
And in 1966, Camp didn't really
die, it just went on the tube. In
his superkeen Batmobile with
Robin at his side. Batman roared
into the vast wasteland and was
greeted with the biggest howl heard
in a long time. Everybody over
age nine knew it was designed to
be High Camp ... or was it?
So for 12 months it went — a
vary fine madness and a kicky kind
of year.

As of last week the Leos seem to
be the best team in the two leagues
with the Atoms a very close second.
The Leo's took a tough game from
the Willards, 42-37 and then eased
by the Crescents 42-23, for their
two opening wins. While in the
other league the Atoms dominated
the standings with a 44-27 win over
the Rebels and a run away over
the Big L’s, keeping their eyes q
the trophy. Other games lxut week
Willards over Crescents, 43-21
Ministers over the Eagles 43-21
and the Snakes downed the MIMi
34-30, in the dosest game of t|
season.
Concerning many questions pn
sented about the rule which pel
tains to ties for first and seco*
place in the league standings,
hope the following will help del
this matter up.
1. The top two teams in eai
league will play in the phq
offs.
2. If two teams tie for first plat
they will flip a coin for fii
and second places and no plaj
off will occur.
3. If two or three teams tie ft
second place, there will be
playoff.
