Sororities and fraternities play a major role on our campus. Many
freshmen enter with the intention of pledging a sorority or fraternity,
so usually most of them go out for rush
Greek life on the Mercer campus Is the backbone of campus life. It
is through the various college activities that sororitiea and fraternities
prove beneficial each year.
There are eight national fraternities and four national sororities
on campus Six of the fraternities already have lodges and two have
plans tu construct lodges All four sororities have lovely, modern suites.
What does being a Greek mean on the Mercer campus? First of all
we have to consider this question scholastically. Both fraternities and
sororities stress the academic side of college life. There are people
standing liehind you who cam about your development and preparation
for leadership and responsibility The student easily obtains help from
another "sister" or "brother" and is given a good study environment
This setting is advantegeous to students who want direction and func
tion best within an established framework
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Social development is another advantage. In a Greek organization,
one forma lasting friendships and embarks into relationships with people
who wouldn’t normally be sought out The sisterhood and brotherhood
which one experiences is valued highly by every Greek.
This brief introduction to Greek life on our campus will be followed
up hy articles about the vatious sororities and fraternities as they deve
lop in all areas Perhaps each Creek organization will lie able to benefit
and learn from each other

ATO’s Capture Rush With Forty-Three:
KA And Lambda Chi Place and Show
By Leonard Bone
The exciting story this week was of course the climax of
rush on Sunday, when the freshmen acknowledged their bids
and promised themselves to their respective fraternities
As always there was some dis
cussion and discontent with the pre-
sent system, but for the most |>art,
the activity was tiring and inspiring
enough to produce frosh, and up
perclassmen as well, who were dead
on their feet but still raring to go.
The real story, however, was the
annual competition among the fra
temities to come up with their big
gest and/or best classes ever
Other social news qf note is of
course the big dance this weekend

are planning their parties and as
