Convocation . . .
(Continued from page 1)
Henry, Jr., President of LaGrange
College since 1948 who addressed
the students. Dr. Henry’s address
was entitled "Myth and Reality of
College”.
Dr. Waighta G. Henry Jr., explod
ed some myths concerning a college
education Tuesday in Willingham
Chapel.
“It is a myth to believe that edu
cation is just running to the book
to find the answer to your problem.
The educated person is not one
with just a set of facta, but also
with a set of attitudes,” he said in
a ceremony at 10 a.m.
Speaking to the Mercer students,
guests and the faculty robed in aca
demic regalia. Dr. Henry said, “It
is not only a myth but a heresy to
believe that you can get an educa
tion simply by going to college.
You have a choice between grad
uating as an educated person or as
an ignoramus. Don’t get short
changed in college by failing to
know the difference between myth
and reality.”
A second myth. Dr. Henry point
ed out, “is that the very large in
stitution can provide a more basic
foundation of knowledge because it
offers so many more courses than
does the smaller school.’’ Quoting
Dr. Edward D. Eddy, president of
Chatham College in Pittsburgh,
Dr. Henry said, “the undergrad
uate years should be regarded as an
experience, not as a sum total of
earned credits in a necessarily
sumptuous setting. It is better to
have the specialty of the house than
to have a four-page menu of short
order items.”
The speaker, who has been pres
ident of LaGrange College at La-
Grange, Ga., 19 years, stated that
leaders in business and industry
“are pleading for the production of
educated persons rather than mere
trained persons.”
He quoted from a “Scientific
American report, which shows that
America’s greatest scientists con
tinue to come from the small lib
eral arts college. “The fact is that
the smaller institution can more
nearly guarantee that the student
will have a properly balance diet of
knowledge and experience than the
larger one, because in a situation
where the student has to select ten
or twelve courses from among two
hundred in a given subject field, it
is possible for him to suffer from
academic anemia.”
Another myth which Dr. Henry
discredited was that “the college is
an ivory tower, set high on a hill
away from the struggles of life.”
Members of the faculty and admin
istration, he said, are citizens who
pay taxes, vote, serve on committees
and buy groceries at the supermar
ket “Being servants of enlight-
ment and truth, they are held un
der suspicion because their criti
cisms are interpreted to be an at
tack upon entrenched and endow
ed inequities and exploitation . . .
It is because of their sensitivity to
what is true and untrue that social
reforms often start on the college
campus.”
The ivory tower concept is belied
also by the student bodies who are
represented in all facets of Ameri
can life including business ven
tures, study seminars abroad.
Peace Corps, drama, music and ec
onomic opportunity programs.
He urged Mercer students “to
seek a real education by full in
volvement on the campus” and
thus to “demonstrate to the world
that knowledge is light, and light is
power, and power is the tool for
personal and social and spiritual
fulfillment”

What Is The Job Corps?
by Roger Bell
Many discussions involving Mer
cer students occur both on and off
this campus. One subject that is
sometimes discussed is the Job
Corps. However it seems that in a
discussion of this nature, one often
runs short of facts with which to
support or disclaim the Job Corps.
So herein the interested reader may
turn to possibly find just what he
wants to know.
The Job Corps is a national
training program for young people
made possible by the Economic
Opportunity Act of 1964. It pro

There are more than 115 Job

various sections of the United
States. Many are operated for the
Job Corps by major business cor

The centers provide a total

at the center, participate in a 60-

physical fitness, and citizenship
