Pledge Sweethearts And Retreats
By Carol Bruce
Now that rush is over and classes have begun the Greek
women are enthusiastic as they get back into the swing again.
Everyone is so happy with rush — each sorority got a great
pledge class!
Friday night the ADPi’s had a spend-the-night birthday
party in their suite. Also, the ChiO’s entertained with an Owl
Hoot. The Phi Mu’s invited their promisees over for a slumber
party, and Lynn Goyen was surprised on her 21st birthday.
Several fraternities have elected their sweethearts for the
coming year. The KA’s elected Phi Mu promisee Julie* Hulsey,
the Kappa Sigs honored Theresa Swety (ADPi), and Angie
Rowe (Phi Mu) as the new Phi Delt promisee sweetheart.
Congratulations to the promisee officers of Alpha Gamma
Delta who are Helen Low, President; Karen McCartney, Vice-
president; and Susan Scott, Secretary-treasurer. Miss Gweyn
Getzen is also the newly elected Vice-president of Phi Mu.
A formal ceremony honored the promisees of Phi Mu on
Monday afternoon. ADso the Phi Mu’s have slated October 21
as the date of their annual “Promisee-pledge Retreat”. The
sisters are all set to win the football game again this year.
ADPi enjpyed church service together on Sunday. They
all went to the Tatnall-Square Presbyterian Church.
Freshman Week was highlighted Monday evening by the
talent contest. Nancy Westwood placed second and Susan Lun-
ford placed third in the contest.
Many Greek women were sponsored in the Miss Freshman
Contest. They went through several routines and eliminations
to determine the girl whose poise best represented what a
Mercer Freshman woman should be. In the absense of Baxter
Billson ( last year’s “Miss Freshman”); the first runner-up,
Carol Bruce placed the crown upon the winter.
Candlelight filled the Alpha Gam suite several times in the
past few weeks. At rush retreat there were candle lightings for
Nancy Armisted, engaged to ATO Frank Buller; Judy Bab
cock, pinned to Don Hawkins, Sigma Nu at the University of
Miami; and Andrea Jackson, pinned to Bill Lovejov, a Phi Delt
at Georgia Tech.
Congratulations are in order for Linda McGarrah who is
now lavaliered to KA pledge Moe Brooks, and for Carol Ann
Wright, who will marry ATO’s Arden Kelly in December.
The other sororities have no new fraternity news. What’s
with you fellows anyway?!
Patties *JkU Weekend:
SAFs To Have "Boogie Chillun'
By Leonard Bone
The (octal season officially opens
this weekend. SAE have what is
billed as an informal party at
Jonesco. Entertainment will be by
the Boogie Chillun, who are spec
ialists in "swamp music.” Swamp
music, so Harry Moore informs me,
is the northern term for soul mu
sic. No matter what you call it,
they are a tremendous and versatile
group, and the E’s are sure of hav
ing a good time.
Due to some oversight, Leigh
Montgomery was omitted from the
listing of promisees last week . . .
The ATO’s kicked off their social
season last weekend with their
classic retreat to the cool inspiring
areas of Macon and vicinity that
are so popular. Not all were at the
creek, however, and Bob Bailey,
man of his word that he is, proved
that anyone can win friends and in
fluence people, eh Bob?
Tonight the Taus celebrate their
uh-h, well, who needs a reason,
with an informal party. Leila Kane
was selected as the ATO candidate
for the Freshman beauty contest.
She will be Joined in the contest by
Mark McGaughey. the choice of

Somewhere in that long list of
ATO grnsilssss last weak I omitted
the name at their star, Bob Karaey.
My apologies .
Ernest Gilbert, noted fashion
consultant for Esquire, was seen
wearing aocks lest week. Is this the
ware of the future? ... The Lamb
da GUIs are having a picnic at Ba-
coswfleld on Saturday, with a bro
ther-promisee football game as a
sidelight. Their dance last week at
Kraftsmen's Lodge was highlighted
by the Celtics. Construction is due
to begin soon on their lodge: this is
good sign for Lambda Chi and the
whole fraternity system at Mercer.
Good going! . . . How about that
poor lion in front of the SAE lodge:
who would ever dream that social
life at Mercer could be so void as
to cause people to deface that poor
lion for entertainment . . .
The Phi Delta, after recovering
from last week's Phi Mu-Phi Delt
Day, will be back on the prowl
again with the reorganisation of
the ’87-TJ8 Explorers Club. Tksk

in the academic community. I will
not be content with simply occupy
ing a seat at the SGA meetings.”
Mark Bass has a simple, one
sentence, platform telling the stu
dents what they want: ”... a pres
ident who will act immediately on
responsible freshman suggestions,
and who will be a capable middle
man between the class and the uni
versity.”
Also heard around campus is
what David Goyen thinks the high
office entails: “An active represent
ative of the freshman responsible
for the class, backing its ideas,
working as a median between the
faculty, upper classmen, and the
class of 71.”

The MIMA’s are proud to an
nounce that one of their boys, Lar
ry Finkelstein, took top honors in
the Freshman Talent Show, and
are just as proud that Carole
Smallwood will represent them in
the Frosh Beauty Contest. Due to
various conflicts in the MIMA
rush schedule, a complete listing
of pledges and promisees was not
available; they are as follows:
(pledgee) Gary Abbot, Cal Gough,
Bowen, Andy Brum bach, Tom Bry
ant, Jai Cochran, Ed Davidson.
Bryant Durham, Larry Finkelstein,
John Hunt, Ken Jackson, Keith
Wright, and (promisees) Charles
Robert Sipe, Dan Thigpen. Alvin
Hassle Rosser, Dennis Sanders,
Kehler, Gerry Kobylinski, Ron
Leach, Randy Meincke, David
Mount, Dan Nottingham, Bruce
Otto, Barry Pritchett, Ken Rice,
Jerry Thomas, Johnny Turner,
John Waldrop, David Willis, David
Wilson, and William Young . . .
Kappa Sigma is idle this week
end after a big rockout last week
end at Kraftsmen's Lodge.
This weekend will see individual
activity on a large 9cale. This is a
good sign since so much social ac
tivity is too often group oriented
and restricted. To find out what
some of the Freshmen think about
this and other problems I talked
with several and came up with
many good observations. One that
was particularly interesting was ex
pressed by Steve Carreker on the
subject of how social attitudes
change. He remarked that the big
difference between rush week and
the regular social week is that case
of one group pitted against another
(the fraternity vs. the rushes)
evolves into a case of the two groups
coming together.
It becomes a situation where
there is mutual socializing rather
than a case of one group entertain
ing another. It was an interesting
conversation and really informa
tive.
The Sigma Nu's are trekking to
Athens this weekend for the Geor
gia-South Carolina game, after last
week’s big blow out at Jonesco on
Saturday. Sunday they feted their
rush girls with a banquet Just one
problem faces the Nu’s this week
end: who will watch the bomb? . . .
Kappa Alpha joins the ranks of
those inactive as a group this week
end with the emphasis on individ
uals “enrichment."
