1ME MERCER CLUSTER
Bruins Clipped;
Eagles Win 86-80
The visiting Eagles of Carson-Newman left their mark on
Bobby Wilder s Bears last Thursday night by defeating Mercer
86-80. This was victory number 13 for the Eagles and inturn
was the Bear’B seventh loss.
Mercer led during the first half
by some 14 points at one time and
went into the locker room for half
time with a two-point lead. The
Eagles came back in the second
half and controlled this period al
most from the very sounding of the
whistle. Bobby Wilder had the
Bears use all their plays during the
last few minutes, but this wasn’t
enough to stop Carson-Newman.
During the first five minutes of
the contest, the score was tied three
times and the lead went back and
forth between the Bears and the
Eagles. The Bears then went wild
after Coach Wilder was fouled for
disagreeing with an official on a
call. The Mercer Bruins rallied 13
straight points in 4 l /i minutes to
advance the score in their favor to
27-13 with some 8 minutes to be
played in the first half.
After this Bear attack, the Eagles
reorganized and slowly brought the
score more to their liking. With
some two minutes remaining in the
first half the score was all tied at
36-36. Irv See man and Robert Bel-
loir hit for Mercer in the last min
ute to have Mercer leading 40-38
at half time.
The Bears had four players in
double figures, led by Jud Roberts
with 24 and Bill Naylor with 20.

ATO Leads With 3-0
Phi Delts, Kappa Sigma 2-1
Last week brought the defending
champions ATO against Phi Delta
Theta. The much improved Tau
team swept the backboards and
rolled to a 68-34 victory, their sec
ond in as many starts. At the half,
the Tau’s held a slim lead and that
seemed to be enough as they wore
the overweight Phi’s down.
Behind the shooting of Terry
Wainscott, Tom Rhodes and Char
lie Wes tom and defensive work by
Charlie Pierce, the Tau’s blanket
ed the court. Wednesday the Tau’s
completed their third victory for
the season with a win over Lambda
Chi.
In other action the Kappa Sigs
moved over the Sigma Nu’s to take
a second place both behind MIMA
and SAE who are tied for first and
were idol this week. The SN also
played the Pi Kapp’s and scored
their first victory for the season.
As the season grows older, the
ATO’s are a sure bet for the finals
and most likely the championship
for the second straight year. Strong
quntenders are SAE, KS. KA, and
PfaiDah.

start of the second half right after

41-40. Jud Roberts put one away
making it 42-41, and the Bears
never came above water for the last
nineteen minutes remaining.
Bobby’s Bruins began a full court
press with some 6 minutes left with
the score 74-63. They cut the mar
