Mercer Bears are going to have a losing season this year,
but with a few breaks and an ability to shoot foul shots the
situation could possibly be different. Coach Wilder has a good
bunch of boys; in fact in Jud Roberts he probably* has one of
Mercer’s finest all time players. Nobody would complain about
Robert Belloir or Tom Mitchell when he plays.
It was just one of those yean and
the Bears got off to a bad start and
really didn't play together well un

Georgia Southern gave them the
impetus; they won with some regu

There have been those special
moments this year we won't forget
Mercer futilely chasing Huntingdon
in the first Mercer Invitational only
to go down in defeat when the
Hawks seemingly never missed
from the foul line. The complete
frustration of blowing a 14-point
lead to nationally ranked Carson-
Newman and as mentioned before,
the happiness of the win over arch
rival Southern. The Bears tasted
their first Homecoming victory in 3
years and revenged a loss to Tam
pa last year by whipping them 80-
79 with native Tampan Jud Roberts
doing the honora. It was a season of
pluses and minuses; Jud Roberta
and Robert Belloir on the plus side,
and a lack of spirit and free throw
shooting to the debit side.
Individually the Bears had some
standouts. Roberts continues his 20
point average into the last game
and Belloir is shooting around a 17
point clip. Both these boys’ talents
are well appreciated by the student
body, their ball handling as well as
their shooting. The steals these two

With adequate rebounding and
foul shooting the Bears could roar
next season. They should be able
to run with anybody; Jud and Bel

as anybody we’ve seen. With ade

be inspired to a winning season. In

Friday night the Mercer Bears
were defeated at the hands of the
Jacksonville Dolphins. Hie home
team was outmatched by the height
of the Florida team, and though
the Bruins played a fast game, they
couldn’t stop the rebounding of
Rod McIntyre. Fr omtbe very be
ginning the game was Jacksonville’s
game. Afte rthe initial minutes, the
Bears fell behind by a margin of 6
points. They remained behind un
til the last minutes, but remained
in contention, dosing the gap to
two points; the half time score was
34-32.
The second half was the deciding
factor for the home team. The two
Sophomoie guards sprang back and
showed their true form, form that
had previously beaten the Yellow
Jackets of Tech, Stetson and Wil
liam and Mary. The Wilder team
was out rebounded, scored and ma
neuvered the whole second half.
Bill Naylor, the only retiring Sen
ior op the team, played one of his
finest'‘games, rebounding several
shots from the much taller Mc
Intyre.
Jud Roberts led the Bean in
scoring, and compiled a total of 19
points. Bill Naylor put in 12 points,
to Freshman Jim Graham’s 10. The
team shot a 46 percent of baskets,
or 13/28 attempted points.
The Florida Dolphins were led
by the Shopomore, Rod McIntyre.
He shot 30 points. The other tall
Sophomore, Tom Purvis, poured in
21 points. Kellam and Smith were
the other two scorers in the double
figures. They had 12 and 10 re
spectively. The Dolphins shot a re
markable 54.8% or 25/28 baskets.
Mercer closed its season with a
9-14 season. Jacksonville has a 12-
12 record with two more games re
maining to be played.
Tuesday night in Porter Gym,
the Tampa Spartans dearly defeat
ed the Bears by a score of 81-65.
From the very outset of the game,
it looked as if the Tampa team was
determined to reverse the outcome
of Mercer-Tampa’s previous match.
In the initial minutes of the
game, the Spartans lead by Senior
Rudy Bradley, jumped to a quick
seven point lead, and maintained
the margin Til mid quarter. With
four minutes left in the half, the
Bears managed to whittle, tempo
rarily, the visiting team's lead. The
effort didn't quell the Spartan's
style for long, and by the half had
resumed a strong lead with a score
of 40 28.
In the second half the Bruins
fared no better; .training by ten
points. Senior Bill Naylor pulled
down several key rebounds, and
made a fine show against Tampa’s
Stevens. But the individual efforts
of the Bears was not sufficient to
stop the Spartan’s march. The final
score was 66-81.
Jud Roberta led the Bean with
17 points. Bill Naylor sank six free
throws, and came out with a score
of 12 points. The other Bears in

and Tori Mitchell each scoring 11

The Spartans were led in scoring
with 21 points. Other top scores
were had by Bob Stevens and Lu
ther Henely; each securing 16
points. Jimmy Smith had 16, and
John Selencio trailed with 9 points.
Mercer made 28/66 shots, to
Tampa’s 33/61 points. Mercer’s
record now stands with a 9-13 sea
son, and concludes with
against Jacksonville.

Poverty Director Speaks
On Struggle for Survial
The war on poverty was described Monday by the aouti
eastern director of the Office of Economic Opportunity as
cosmic struggle for survival.
Unless we win," Dr. Ralph
Phelps told Mercer University
students, “We cannot send enough
men overseas to win there.”
“If we lose the struggle at home,
we will create an image that is net
going to commend our way of life
to the one-third of the world that is
not committed.”
Dr. Phelps, who is on leave as
president of Ouachita Baptist Uni
versity, Arkadelphia, Arkansas,
challenged churches to “become
more than sacred societies for snub
bing sinners.” He said, “Much of
what we are doing in the Office of
Economic Opportunity can be done
better by the churches. We must
with Christian compassion care
what happens to people.”
Dr. Phelps criticized Christians
for not wanting “to become involved
in the ugly world” and said, “We
must be a servant church or get out
of the business.”
The basic idea of the OEO war
on poverty is to help people help
themselves. Dr. Phelps said. He ad
mitted shortcomings and called the
OEO “one of the wont implement
ed programs” but said, "Until we
come up with a better program we
had better utilize the one we have.”
Hie speaker said, “We have
seen the beginning of chaos that
are going to sse in this country,
are going to sea a long, hot summ
because of the bitterness and
of people who have lived on the as
human level for so long."
Dr. Phelps told the Mercer ah
dents that one of five America
lives below the poverty line. He
scribed the poverty line as a fai
ily of four having an income
83,000 a year or lass. There are,
this classification, 86 million Arm
leans of whom 70 percent are wW
persons, be said.
“It is hard to believe that peoj
in this country are starving
death,” he said, “but there
many children who eat only
meal a day and that Is the
lunch they get at school”
