Our S. G. A. has served in most instances as the necessary valve to control and channel this im petus, but -the •r Imitation and enlarging of this ■omentum depends primarily up- the ability and resources of bose chosen to lead in S. G. A. iffices next year. . The S. G. A. must do several Isngs or else label itself as "in flective". The first of these is to peak as a united and concerned ludent body to the .laxness of the ^ministration in hiring profess- These professors are needed fill the empty offices and by sing that to relieve the crowded lass rooms. This tuation is at the expense of de- te and drama, two activities ba- i to a liberal arts campus. While use the speech department as i example, it points to the needs f several other departments in ■r university. Secondly, I think the S. G. A. nst provide through "Insight" n bcussion of topics of interest and ■ievance to the college mind, here must also be programs that 9 something and not be just nsational time wasters. Thirdly, I think the 8. G. A. ust be responsive to any idea it might enhance some facet of sr school. This might include •‘stablishment of a regional Scott McCall Of all Mercer’s members nous has taken more interest in the stu dents than Scott McCall. Be ye Greek or not, Soott has met you at some spot. Friendly is the word to use, Scott is the one to choose in representing you before the 8.G.A. Qualifications he’s a plenty, just this last year he’s proven many. Scott's had his station in public relations, as chairman for K E. As the “VP” of A.P.O. everyone has seen it grow. Q u a 1 i f i - cations lacks he none, he is our campus’s favorite son. We’ve all heard the cheerful call of one Scott McCall. Always eager to converse, never is he rude or terse. As your rep. he’d give you pep, when you do take your trou bles to his step. In S.G.A., he’d hear what you’ve to say. His purpose is to voice the opin ions of your choice. He'll do his best to help the rest. In absence of the President, you’ll have no cause to lament. Neither rain, nor snow, nor Hell, nor fire can quench the gall of Scott McCall. Having given sufficient cause, it is thus suggested you take a pause and give a moment's bright reflection and choose the best in YOUR election. So, Y’all vote Mc Call! nar ua dot campus tor the Udent governments of Georgia id southern schools, or maybe exchange of student work with larby schools. Lastly, I feel the S. G. I will take a Md for yon. ••••VOTE YES »«he “DUKE"! Secretary • J Fran Hart On this ss on every campus, there are those students with an active desire to participate in university affaire. This article concerns one of those studets, Fran Hart. She is best known for her enthusiasm and spirit at all sports events as one of Mercer's cheerleaders. However she is not only ca pable of per forming before an audience, but -behind- the scenes as well She has been active in many and varied aspects of campus life, serving as an officer in Wesley Foundation and German Club, Co captain of the cheerleaders, an ac tive participant in W.A.A., and Personnel Chairman of Chi Omega Fraternity. She is now seeking to broaden her involvement in student affairs by running for secretary of the Stu dent Government Association. It is toward this endeavor that she eli cits your support and your vote. Her past experience is sufficient proof of her enthusiasm concern and willingness to work, and it is with these qualifications that she submits her campaign to you. the voter. Don’t Forget To Vote April 3rd Christie Tyler Even though I have never served on Student Gov ernment before, I can read, write, hear, and I am acquainted with a good croas-section of the student body. Therefore, I consider my self well quali fied to serve you as secretary of the Student Government Associa tion. Christie Tyler Treasurer Martiel Babbitt It’s hard to know what to write about yourself when you're running for any office, especially for that of Treasurer of S.G.A. You want to write something that will make everyone want to vote for you from the foggiest freshman to the wisest senior. But what can you say that will convence ev eryone that you are qualified for the office when you're not even sure yourself what the quali fications should be? To tell you that I’m interested and active in several different student activities. I could list the clubs that I belong to and the office that I hold such as Program Chairman of SNEA, Vice President .of Sigma Tau Gam ma, Vice President of Chi Omega, member of Cardinal Key, and mem ber of the Mercer Honor Council. But my main qualification for SFA Treasurer is that I was an ac tive member of SGA this year as a member of the Appropriations Committee. On this committee, we deal with the distribution of the Student Activities Fee paid by ev ery student into the many services on the campus that it supports such as Cluster, Cauldron, Fine Arts Se ries, SGA, etc. As a member of SGA, 1 became aware of many of the problems and possibilities of a Student Government. I feel that one of the main functions of SGA is to provide campus-wide activi ties that will involve the whole stu dent body such as Insight, Home coming and other type* of enter tainment. In the future, I think that there needs to be more differ ent types of campus-wide activities and that SGA will be able to pro vide these. Another function of SGA w to bring the thoughts and wishes of the students to the at tention of the faculty and adminis tration which is done especially at the Wavefley Conference which I attended last summer and this fall. This year l Was a member of the constitutional revision committee and of the Fine Arts Sub-Commit tee. I say these things because I feel that my experience will help me to bp an affective and informed member of SGA and that this know ledge gained from the Apprapria- tions Committee would he valuable to me as Tieumrar of SGA. Thank you for yon tumrtderation and your vote* *-■ v ,*•: Cluster Editor Claudia Young College life is an important part of any individual's life, and the college newspaper should be in cluded as an integral part of that experience. It is in the paper, Mercer's Cluster, that students be come aware of all that is happen ing in the university complex. The paper announces events, influen ces student op inion, promotes student opinion, advertises the business inter ests of the com munity and covers all sports events. The edi tor of the dus ter co-ordinates and directs all these activities and directs the editorial and business staffs in these activities. Spring elections will be April 3, and at this time a new Cluster editor must be chosen. It is an im portant election, and I am seeking the editorship of the Cluster. Con sider the following qualifications: I as a candidate, fulfill the required constitutional C-plus average and the two quarters experience. In ad dition, 1 have served as Feature Editor, Copy Editor and Sports Editor. I am actively involved in campus life, and am aware of most aspects of this campus and its ac tivities. Though 1 am a member of a Greek organization, my friends have not been limited to that or ganization. Working in the admis sions office for three years, I have gained experience in presenting Mercer University as a whole, and not a group of isolated bodies. I hope to carry this experience to the paper, presenting the Cluster as a student publication, reflecting the student body. 1 am a member of the Student Union Board, which co-ordinates and promotes new stu dent activities. As past sports edi tor and cheerleader. I have had much contact with the sports seg ment of campus life. Though in volved in these Activities, if elected, these activities would not hinder, but help my work on the Cluster. If there are any questions concern ing my candidacy and plans for the paper, I will answer them on campus. 1 will need your support, and will od my best to make the Cluster the important part of cam pus life. Susan Cheshire I would like to take this oppor tunity to sav to you how much I do want to serve on Student Gov ernment, not on ly in. the capa city of Treasur er. but also as an active mem ber. I sincerely • ’ would appreci ate your voteon April 3. —Susan Cheshire Amendment The Plucked Dulcimer, Stu dent Literary Magazine, shall be an authorized student pub lication as provided for under Article VII. Sections 3,4,5 and 6, and shall comply with regu lations the mo* aa thflee eraing the Editor theCAULDRON. Paul Kirk It is important what you, aa a student, "really want to- know." What you really want to know is important to me right now as a candidate, and would of needs be important to me should you select me to be Cluster Editor. Because I place a high Value on the importance of what the stu dents "really want to know”, I be lieve it would be inappropriate to devote this space and opportunity to a listing of all my extracur ricular activi ties, or to de scribing what I believe to be the ideal college w s p a - per Rather, what 1 think you, as students and voters, “really want to know” is to what extent I am qualified for the Editorship, and if elected, what may be my specific plans relative to the development of the Cluster. Currently acting as Copy Editor, my experience on the Cluster dates back more than two quarters re quired to qualify for the office. Having served in the capacity of Sports, News and Feature Writer, Photographer, Make-up Editor, As sociate Editor and Circulation Manager, I have acquired a base of ex|>erience in these positions that has led to the establishment of a desirable working relationship not only with the company that prints our paper, but also with the mem bers of the current staff. Because I think that, in addition to his qualifications, what the vo ters “really want to know” about a candidate is what he intends to do if elected, I would like to take this opportunity to impart to you some of my projected plans with regard to the publication of the Cluster. Amongst other improve ments, if elected Editor, it would be my intention to expand the ad vertising program to facilitate the paying of more staff members. It is also my intention to initiate for the first time, a three week train- ing seminar conducted by the Di rector of f3ews Services for the benefit of both the old and new staff members. The two foremen - tioned ideas will not only trans form working on the Cluster staff into a real learning experience, but will help attract more qualified stu dents to the writing aspect of publi cation. In planning to change the present system of reporting Greek news and social events, I believe my status as an impartial unaffi liate will be an asset to all concern ed. With an Editor which is un- affiliated himself, you can be sure that each social organization will have its' own correspondent, each with ample and equal Space in the paper every week, and all given the same editorial considerations. It is my hope that if I have not answered any questions which you may have with regard to my qua lifications or my projected plans if elected, that you will approach either myself or someone wearing one of my campaign tags on cam pus and have your questions an swered. If elected Editor you can be as sured that the publication of the paper will receive my mod sin cere and undivided attention, and that editorial policy will be di rected toward bringing to print those matters about which the stu dents "‘really want to know”.
