1 ( A NOVEMBER 22, 1968 MERCER CLUSTER Sports Review By Lou At the beginning of the college football Reaaon the big question was who would win the coveted Heismann trophy, Leroy Keyes, with his superb all around play, or O. J. Simpson, perhaps the best running back in the country. With the season almost finished, it seems little doubt that it will be a battle for the award. If there is any question, it's who’ll be in the running besides O. J. However, due consideration should be given to Keyes. His per formances have not been lackluster by any margin this year. He has been plagued by nagging injuries all season and this has kept his effectiveness below par. Meanwhile, Simpson has been nightmare for all of his opponents. With three more games to play, he is easily in reach of the all-time major college rushing record. If he does capture the rushing record, this will be some feat, because this is only his second year of compe tition. Although the balloting has not started, it will be little more than mere formality. Simpson, known to his teammates as “Orange Juice" will capture the award that he al most won last year in his first sea son. With the opening game only a few weeks away, there is a lot of spirit among this year's cagers as to the kind of year they are going to have. Marvin Bailey, a big 6' 6" fresh man, has been quite a pleasant surprise. He has proven to be a very effective rebounder and is quite adept at blocking shots in and around the the pivot spot. However, he tends to be a little over-anxious sometimes in attemtp- ing to block shots. This will prob ably be corrected as he gains a little more experience. Johnson Robert Bellior, who is coming back after a slight shoulder in jury, probably exppressed some of the optimism when he said, "We are going to whip any team that throws up a zone against us, we have a lot of good shooters.” There has been reports linking Senior guard Jud Roberts as a Little All-America candidate. This would certainly be a fine honor given to a fine player and all aroupd person. Good luck to Roberta and I hope he gets the honor. Playoffs for the Intramural Touch Football championship will begin this week and tensions are running high as the four teems prepare for their big battles. The Unaffiliates will square off against MIMA and Sigma Nu will face A TO, who finished their sea son without a loss or a tie. The Unaffiliate-MIMA match will feature an explosive offense against a steady defense. The UA’s, behind the passing of Brady Zeig- ler, are capable of making the big 8core from anywhere on the field. MIMA's offense isn’t lacking any when it comes to making the big play, but they don’t have the speed of the UA’s. They play good de fensive ball and have a very strong pass rush. The UA defense can’t be taken lightly though. Their de fensive alignment features a strong rush and they are very effective against the long pass. The ATO-SN battle will also be a defense -offense battle. The Sig ma Nu team has a very strong de fensive team, led by linebacker Raider Stracem. They will have their hands full though as they try to stop the passing game of ATO, behind the strong arm of quarter back Jim Bennett Kickoff time will be Thursday at 3:60. Come out and yell for your favorite team. MIMA Humiliates Pi Kappa 63-0 By John Kidd The Trojans of MIMA wrapped up their division crown last Thurs day with a convincing 63-0 win over Pi Kappa Phi The win gave the Trojans a 3-0-1 record for the year and the right to meet the second place team in the other division in the playoffs (ot the championship. Danny Garcia started the scor ing with a touchdown toss to Charles Bowen but missed the ex tra-point throw. After a Steve Jackson intercep tion, the Trojans pulled the old flea-flicker play on the Raiders which saw Jackson connect on a bomb to Dennis Sanders. The Raiders could not move the ball and the Trojans again scored on a pass to Jackson and another to Bowen for a 38-0 halftime lead. The Trojans continued their romp after intermission, scoring on passes to Ed Davidson by Andy Robinson, Davidson to Bowen, and a weaving run by Garda. MIMA picked off 9 Raider passes, with Sanders running one back for a score, but they con- Drive Carefully verted only three of ten extra point tries. The bombardment failed to dampen the spirit or hope of the eight Raider players, however. They continually gave it all they had as the game got farther out of reach. UA’s Beat KA’s In Close Victory The Unaffiliatee edged the Reb els of Kappa Alpha, 32-31, last Thursday in a game that decided second place in their division and the right to meet the first place club from the other division in the playoffs. The Rebels scored first on a cold, wet and windy day, but the Unaffiliates scored almost with ease after that first TD. The score at halftime saw the UA’s on top, 20-6, as they thwart ed almost every offensive effort of the Rebels. The Unaffiliates scored again in the third quarter, but two scores by KA closed the gap. On the kick-off following the second Rebel TD, Lou Johnson hit Brady Zeigler with a 60-yard scor ing pitch- Zeigler caught the ball on the Rebels 30 and weaved his way in and out of blockers and defenders as he crossed the end zone with what proved to be the winning TD. The Rebels counted another tal ly on a desperate fourth down pass that was completed despite a blitz from the UA team. Time ran out on the Rebels though, as they saw the UA’s run with the ball, making no effort to do more than keep the clock run ning. DOWN WITH SOILED SUMMARIES!
