January j«. m* Number 9 Carney Featured in Coffee House “One of the most sought-after aits on the Coffee House Circuit tills year,” he will appear at Mer cer this week with the coffee House act sponsored by the Student Government Association. Brian, son of comedian Art Car ney, brings a myriad of songs to the stage that adds up to the many musical sounds of the day in a totally entertaining and enjoyable presentation. His repertoire includes TieaUe mnfp, Tom Jones’ hits, some of the more popular folk hits, ballnrds and sing-a-longs. Brian has played many of the famous coffee houses on the East coast and has made over thirty- two colleges appearances. He brings with him a tre mendous amount of identification for the college audience, for he is twenty-one and. was a college stu dent himself just a short while ago at DePauw University. He will be appearing twice nightly, January 27-3t in room 333 of the Connell Student Center. G.B.C. President Dr. Walter Lane Moore, the pas tor of Vineville Baptist Church and the President of the Georgia Baptist Convention, will be the guest speaker In chapel on January 36 and 31. Holding degrees from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute and South western Baptist theological Semi nary, Dr, Moore has also attended briefly Havana University, Mercer University, and Union Theological Seminary. He Is also the holder of an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Mercer University. A former missionary in Havana, Cuba, he has made several preach ing tours to Latin America. He has also spoken at numerous as semblies and conferences in the United States and has held pasto rates In Georgia and Mississippi for 34 years. His writings include "Courage and Confidence from the Bible" and the Sermon Suggestions in the Quarterly Review from 1954 to the present. Dr. Moore also writes re gular assignments for various pub lications of the Sunday School Riiaid of the Southern Baptist Con vention. Throughout the years, Dr. Moore has 'been an integral part of the Mercer community, serving as chairman of the committee Which resolved the question of the first negro coming to Mercer. He was also chairman of the Committee to Study College Courses and Text books. A man of courage and con viction, Dr Moore was the only one who frubUely defeniled Dr. Otto in the “F” You incident. Dr. Moore Ticket Validation When the meal ticket validation system was begun, it was authoriz ed under the stipulation that the number of people forgetting their ID's would not exceed fifty. SGA Passes Federal Aid The third meeting of the Student Government Association convened Monday night in the Trustee's Dining Room. President Ed Bacon called the meeting to order Hugh Dukes led the meeting off with a discussion of the student discount service. Both Wesleyan and Tift are now in the process Of taking polls of what businesses are patronized by their students so they an join us in this movement. Freshman advisor, Steve Richey, eported on the formation of the Orientation Evaluation Committee ,.nd the following freshmen were ippointcd: Gary Hurowitz, Jack Pritchard, Harry Conroy, Bruce Gordy, Richard Heider, Sallie Car ter, Jeanette Pill fan, Sara Harrison, l.iltyan Germaine, Sally Fulcher. Patti Ann Richey, and Chuck Brewer. President Ed Bacon reported that quick action was taken by those officials of the University after last weeks student wage resolu tion and expressed his thanks. It was announced that Wednes day night, January 22 at 6:30. Steve Abbott, President of SGA at Emory University will be at Mer cer to speak in an “Open Forum”, a diacusrton on studsnt government. Bob Cell ins presented to the SGA a petition on Federal Aid which was approved and reads as follows: WHERE, w*e the undersigned affirm that the Trustees of Mercer University should and do have final authority in the contrdl and direction of the policits of Mer cer University; and, WHEREAS, we feel that additional financial resources, must become available to Mercer University at the lowest possible interest rates for ite continued livelihood and progress; and, WHEREAS, we feel that this end could be achieved by the aecur- ing of federal loans to Mercer University, and, WHEREAS, we feel that the secur ing of such leans does not con stitute a violation of the principle of separation of church and state. Pier*, Florida, was nominated by KA. She is indeed representative of Mercer spirit through her activities as President of Phi Mu, a varsity cheerleader, member of Panhellic and the Photo Club. Gary, alio a senior, is busy as President of KA, former President of IFC, a inombei of Wesley Foundation. Recently he was honored by being selected to Who's Who in American Collegia and Universities.
