than a “by-the-way” treatlae 'which
you can a tore away within your
Intellect. If either is done, then
something, be it small dr large, has
been accomplished.
Last year it was from mere coin
cidence that I heard of “Project
Hope.’-’ Now I want to tell the en
tire world about it. From higher
echelons, however, tath is occurr
ing much more effectively and
thoroughly; and It Is the entire
world that is hearing continually
about it, and most assuredly, bene
fiting from it.;
*. “Project Hope” is sponsored
directly in Washington, D.C. by the
People-to-People Health Founda
tion, Inc., -and by the people of the
United States. Through their pri-
. vntp donations they have kept the
complete hospital ship “HOPE"
(Health Opportunity for People
Everywhere)- sailing Since 1960,
•■with a five million'dollar cost basis
annually-.
The 15.000 ton, fivc-deckcd ship
in. its entirety is a fully equipped
hospital with 230 patiorit-bed 1 -.
Each, year • the HOPE for ten
months visits a country - which has
. a dire need fqr ine’dicnl progress.
Upon request for the past .eight
.years, HOPE has visited Indonesia,.
South Vietnam, Peru, Equndnr,
Guinea, Nicaragua, • Columbia, and
since Mar. of ’68 has been in port

The primary objective of fhi'

Award goes this -week to Brother

Gomiviunl will be held the 24th
staff hi to teach and not simply to
donate money or medical equip
ment. Approximately 120 doctors,
and nurses of all specialties com
prise the paid permanent staff.
During ita ten month stay, five
two-month rotations occur where
by eighty volunteer doctors fly to
. the ship from the states for each
rotation in order to assume their
role of teacher. The success of Pro
ject Hope Is due not only to the
American citizens, but to the per-
• manent and volunteer medical
staff teaching on and from HOPE.
each year.
In- addition to the professional
staff, eight to fifteen college stu
dents are selected by HOPE each
summer for the June - July rota
tion, In Ceylon this past summer,
three students from Univ. of N.C.,
one from Pombna Collegeg, one
from Rollins, one from Columbia,
and one from Mercer composed the
summer student program.
• We. spent out first week survey
ing an o'rphan home, a detention
home, a blind anti deaf School, a
2000 student public school, and a
leper colony of 600. Our purpose
was to determjne what each school
needed that we could at least ini
tiate and possibly supply during the
two-month.period. .
The actnity varied from organ
izing volleyball and soccer—to
tally and physically Mttttod chil
dren, thirty physically fit orphans,
and forty abandooed babtes (the
majority at whom would not live
past three year*). Two converted
Buddhists assumed the.full life
time role of mesters of the home,
with the help of six attendants for
the three sections. .
The m&taily and physically re
tarded children interacted with the
normal orphans, and hence volley
ball, cricket; and dodgeball were
Initiated with both groups integrat
ed. In addition, during our three
day weekly attendance, pasteurized
milk manufactured from the ship
was taken to all the children.
The program at,the public school
was to be used as a “model” tor the
four public schools In the same
district. The first two weeks we
utilized for organizing' physical ed
ucation classes. The following two
weeks publis health cartoons were
shown to the children in addition
to the P.E. classes- The second
month, we as mere advisers to 15
prefect students and eight teachers,
• organized a carnival which the
School sponsored for. Us own stu
dents and for the surrounding dis
trict. ■ . ,
At the leper colony, one' ward
out of twelve was selected to be a
-model for cleanliness. The floor,
walls, and beds were. Infested with
rli'iiningg and painting a ward.
These, however, acted only as
means »o an .ulterior goal. The
underlying idea we felt needed to
l>d installed was that of individual
and group responsibility.-.
The orphan’s home foi- boys was
located on’ tin' coast of the Indian
Ocean,, and like most "homes” it
■was distinctly separated from
.society. Three sections , minprisi'd
the home: twenty (age 6-16) mcn-
filth, despite the fact that a govern
ment laborer swept twice a week.
With the aid at first of only four
lepers, the walls and floor were
scrubbed with' disinfectant. Later
the inside and outside Walls were
painted with the white wash they .
had prepared, Two weeks before
the, completion of. the washing and
painting, fifteen to twenty of the
lepefs in the ward involved them
selves in the work-project.
