ROTC Exponds
To Ft. Valley
coni from page 1
With the start of the school year 1969-70, Fort Valley State
College will begin offering Military Science courses under the
sponsorship of the Department of the Army. The establishment of
a Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) program at Fort Valley
is possible under an agreement entered with Mercer.
A four year course of military instruction has been established
which the Professor of Military Science at Mercer will prescribe and
conduct. Students will be enrolled in Military Science at Fort
Valley State Registrar, who will maintain all academic records per
taining to the program. Students enrolled in the program will re
ceive one hour of academic credit for each quarter of the Basic
Course (total of 6 hours credit) and five hours credit for each year
of the Advanced Course (total of 10 hours credit). Fort Valley
expects to maintain a minimum enrollment of two hundred stu
dents in the Basic Course (first two years).
Student cadets will receive all their instruction on the Fort
Valley State campus, except for six-weeks Summer Camp between
their junior and senior year. They will be required to wear their
uniform once a week on the day drill is scheduled. Two classroom
and an adjacent office have been assigned in the Academic Building
to satisfy initial classroom requirements. The practice football field
will be used for drill. The armory will continue in use as a military
supply and storage.
Since the establishment of a de facto ROTC unit would be in
violation of government regulations, acceptance and control of
Military Department faculty remains with the President of Mercer.
Normally, faculty members of Military Science can expect to be
assigned various duties at both schools. An officer of the Military
Department is included on faculty committees whose recommenda
tions would directly affect the conduct of the Military Science
Program
