Perhaps that’s a cr\ lhal is reminiscent of the banners around Shea Stadium this fall (break up the Mets!), but old aches and pains themselves gave the students a bit of a shock with their fine showing in the faculty orientation football game.’ If you missed it, you missed a treat. What with Coach B Wildered teaming up w ith his able assistant “Sunshine Superman" and Joltin' Joe, the trio-formed a blitz that was a personification of the old National Football League’s cry that "on any given Sunday • ■, • • , . Except ‘his was on a Friday and the faculty didn't mind * Of course, not all the credit for the fine victory posted by the faculty team goes to the defense. The offense was potent, and at times even explosive. All-stars like the Trembling Dean, Stone Man, and the Money Man contributed their share for the annals. The list goes on Super John, the Quiz Kid, Stuinblin' Steve, And D, A Little Soul and that other fellow. But the coolest head and the sharpest eyes and arm belonged to a Bare. There is more to be said about that' arm. After failing to connect on a bomb to open the game, a Bare came back with a pass that almost zapped the soul out A Little Soul — Touchdown! “.Oohs v and “Aahs” from the sidelines. Is this going to b£ the pattern of things to come? • No happy day for the orientators. And now it’s time for the defense to go to work, and they do. That pass rush put on by B Wildered and Joltin' Joe has the opposing QB on his toes, and on the run. Oops! Fifteen yards against the Dean. For offsides? No, that’s a five yard penalty. Good going refs, you’re really on the ball today. Yes, we all know he’s not suppos ed to step in the lane before the ball hits the rim. Some how that offsides penalty has now convinced Joltin' Joe , that his charge is not fast enough. Out of the slick bottomed sneakers and into the Bare feet. That should produce some re sults. Gonna be interesting anyway. Strong rush on the quarterback — Interception by Coach B Wildered — (Now what do I do with it. If I dribble if, they're certain to put the 1 press on. I wonder if you’re allowed to take more than two steps with the ball in this game - Gotta do some thing, the enemy is coming Fake right and run left — That oughta do it.) A three yard gain and possession for the faculty. Good job by the defense again. Well, a punt by. the faculty — that’s strange.. A perfectly executed blitz by the defense again - Interception by Sunshine Superman! (Ever see him without his sunglasses?) Comments on the sidelines about the last interception: "You see, when you gel the rebound, you’re supposed to spread out like this and you gotta use those elbows just to show them you're there.” ' Denial: "Mv arms w ere held over his head.” A Bare to And D — Touchdown Try for the extra point -■ The Money Man grabs it!■'That guy really comes through when the money . Ronnie Bennett, the student team quarterback, wAs rushed, hard all afternoon by Dean Joe Hendricks and Coach Bobby Wilder. Off and on blitzes by the faculty came at Ronnie almost every other play, giving him little time to get off an accurate pass. „ • The faculty scored their first touchdown early in the first quarter on a long pass from Abare to Lou Johnson who was helping out the short-manned faculty team. The play started as a blocking back pass by Johnny Mitchell, but Mitchell flared back to Abare when he was rushed hard. Later in the quarter the student team staged a drive to paydirt. Ronnie Bennett threw the short pass to Chuck Brewer to tie the score at 6-6 at the end of the first quarter. The quick, hard-hitting rushes<by the faculty made the difference during the remainder of the game. In the middle of the second quarter the faculty scosed the deciding blow. .Abare hit. Andy Robinson on a short pass In the end zone, then came back and made the extra point on a pass to Jerry Lee. The last half of the game was a succession of attempts by the student team for a score.
