Although not looking quite
as impreasive as they did when
they swept past Oglethorpe
and Ft. Valley State In the
tournament, Coach Frank
Radovich's charges had
enough to put down Mercer,
72-64, and make it a clean
sweep of the tourney.
“We just played a bad
game,” said Bear coach Bob
Wilder after his club dropped
its ninth decision in 11 games.
“We can’t seem to put every
thing together with con
sistency. We had a real good
game over at Birmingham last
Friday (beating Sewanee,
83-73) but then played badly
tonight.
“I think the thing we’re
hurting the mo6t in is our
shooting,” he continued. "We
have only two players hitting
over 40 per cent from the
field this season (Jim Graham
and Monnie Brabham) and
you just can’t shoot 30 or 35
per cent and expect to keep
up with the kind of teams we
play.”
The Bears hit only 31 per
cent (26-82) to Southern’s 38
per cent (38-81). A cold
streak late in the first half and
early in the second session
dashed any hope of knocking
off the high-flying Eagles, who
have now won five straight
games to improve their record
to 8-5.
Mercer held a 28-26 edge
with 5:43 to go in the half
but then was ou taco red, 15-2,
in the next four minute* to
fall behind. 41-30. And the
Bears were unable to hit a
field goal during the first six
minutes of the second half.
Southern wasn’t exactly
pouring them in either but did
manage to score six points in
six minutes at the start of the
second half to leap to
16-point leads at 49-33 and
51-35.
After that, the Bears out-
scored Southern the rest of
the way but were unable to
get doser than six points.
Norman was the game’s
high scorer with 20, while
Buckler added 14 and Moore
11, although sitting out moat
of the second half because of
an ankle sprain he suffered
during the tournament which
hasn’t healed completely
Guard Bruce Gordy led
Mercer’s scoring with 15
points, while Brabham added
12 and Graham and tub John
LaPish 11 each.

Vienna Choir
apropos adjective for the
evening.
In the true Vleneae spirit
and superb talent, 22 young
men, some with "'coughs and
colds, and all staying up a
little past their bedtime, sang
the enchanting "Blue Danube”
as it should be sung — in
German.
The Vienna Choir Boys are
on the road for approximately
3'A months at a time. This
tour, the first for some,
stretches from Christmas to
Easter.
While in Austria, the boys’
home country, they claim to
move through their studies
more quickly than in normal
schools. Each studies English
as a foreign language early
though otherwise their sub
jects are comparable for
American children their age.
Some also take up Latin and
French at this early age.
Their lives are traditionally
dictated according to the
booklet “Worthy Instructions
for the Choirmaster”, (1630)
which govern* a daily pro
gression of prayers, classes,
rehearsals, study, play and
sleep. The organization is over
470 years old. Membership in
the choir is highly selective.
There ere three companies
which perform the world over.
The group has appeared,
thus far on their present tour,
in New York City, Phlledel-
phla and Washington. After
completing their stay in the
Atlanta area they will go on
to Lakeland and Miami,
Florida, the Virgin Islands,
and finally California.
The Vienna Choir Boys
rates a* the moet superb vocal
group to appear at Mercer
thus far into the concert
series. The charm of their
angelic faces like the cities on
their itinerary is truly univer
sal. They well deserved the
standing ovation.
