BEARS IMPROVING

Hear mentor concern over the
^hooting figures. Mercer’s
. shooting percentage after 1 1
games is a dismal 39 percent,
.which will not make then,
contenders in mans leagues.
“You i 'n't shoot that kind
of percentage in college ball
am! expect to win.’’ Wilder
said 'You need to shoot at
least, l. r > per cent, to stay with
the competition Our usual
starters’are hitting around 11
per cent, hut the jjyst shooters
on the team aren't getting to
play as much as I w ould like
for them to play.
Freshman Ken Nixon was
one of the shooters Wilder
had in mind. “Nixon can
shop! with anyone, but he
needs to develop a few other
skills before he can play con
stantly." Wilder said
Nixon, who has been used
sparingly Xhis season, showed
just that in the Bears loss to
Rollins, lie shot a season high
of 16 points in a losing cause.
However, the play of Bruce
Gordy has been improving
over his early season perfor
mances. Gordy has come on
to lead the Bears in scoring in
the last five games. Gordy is
the leading scorer for the
Bears with a 15.3 average for
the season.
Jim Graham, the Bears
captain this year, is the
second leading scorer with a
12.4 average Freshmen Mon-
nie Brabham and Jack Scott
are the other leading scorers.
Brabham is scoring at a 9.5
clip with Scott hitting eight
points a game for the 14
games played thus far. An
other Freshman, John La Pish
is averaging 7.4 for the year.
Graham is also the leading
rebounder for the Bears with
98 carooms off the boards.
And surprisingly, Brabham
and Scctt are battling for
second place, even though
Brabham has been playing
guard for most of the year
Scott has garned 87 rebounds,
with Brabham dose behind
with 85. Last year’s second
best rebounder for the Bears
as a freshman, Marvin Bailey,
has 66 rebounds to his credit.
However. Bailey play has been
hampered by an early season
ankle injury that caused him.
to miss two games, and slow
ed his mobility once he did
return to the lineup La Pish
is one rebound behind Bailey
with (55 to his credit
"Our biggest problem is
that we’re not scoring well
enbugh.” said Veal. “In our
last five or six games our re
bounding has improved, which
has helped to offset the poor
shooting."
“Our work on defense is
not good enough, especially
individually defensive play,
but experience is the only
thing that will help this. These
things improve with time, but
we don't seem to have enough
time right now.’’
“What we really need to
do,” Veal said, “is to improve
our shooting percentage, work
on the boards and develop de
fensively. But, with all the
problems this young team has,
we still have a fine young ball
elub. You just can’t win con
sistently with a freshman line
up "

The Sigma Nu squad edged
SAE, 40-36, then ran away
from Kappa Sig. 49-27. In the
SN-’SAE contest, Chichini led
the Snakes with 12 points,
with Bagley scoring 10 in the
win. Sorenson led the Lions
with 14 points, and McGee
scored eight in a losing cause.
Bagley took scoring honors
in the SN-KS clash with 17
points, and Mike Moorhead
and Greene scored 8 apiece.
Parks scored 10 for Kappa Sig
and Mike Shaw claimed run
ner-up honors with '7.
The KA’s got into the
thick of the race with a'46-33
win over the Phi Delts, sad
dling the Delts with their
second loss. Kent Curley blis
tered the nets for 21 points
for the KA’s. as Barron tossed
in 12. Fox was the leading
scorer for Phi Delt with 14
and Jordan shot 8.
In League 2, another new
Unaffiliate team also made the
right moves as they won their
intitial game in intramural
competition.
Ingram defeated MIMA,
38-28, with Bruce Otto lead
ing the scoring. Charlie Wal
ters scored 7 for the new
team, which is managed by
Bill Ingram.
ATO, always in the running
for something, ran the Law
yers dizzy as they breezed to
a 65-35 victory. The Tau’s
had five men with double fig
ures in the convincing tri
umph, with Bobby Heullemeir
tossing in 17 points to lead
the way. Pierce scored 14,
Bennett, Mervis and Conner
chipped in with ten apiece as
the Tau’s used a fast break
that broke the Leagle Eagles
backs.
However, the Lawyers ! eal
ed real fast and came back
with a 42 27 win over Lam
bda Chi. Richard Kiley show
ed the way for the law stu
dents with 12 points, and
Bryant Culpepper gunned in
11. Bill Flowers showed seven
points for Lambda Chi, but he
had to share scoring honors
with Shulz, who also scored
seven.

Some office jobs
are more interesting
than others.
In the old days if a man wanted to be an executive
and craved adventure too, he could skipper a
clipper ship.
Today. . the clippers are gone...
but the supersonics are here And
swashbuckling executives still get
their chance.
it's maybe a million bucks
worth of plane. And wher,
you fly it the responsibil-
y's all yours.
If you’d like to mull
t over every
time you bank
or roll at 1,400+ mph, try for Officer Training
School after you graduate from college. Also, re
member the nice idea of yourself, an Air Force pilot,
captain of all you command, getting to visit foreign
ports like the clipper captain of yore.
An Air Force officer's life is a great life!
Why just be skipper of a desk?
