QUESTION — Do you plan to attend chapel this quarter, since it is not compulsory any more?
Elaborate.
Gail Kline — Only if it’s some
thing worthwhile to hear,
which is very seldom.
Linda Humphrey —' Well, since
I didn't attend chapel last
quarter, until there is some
thing really spectacular.
Ann Cooper - I’ll go if
there’s somebody good
talking and if I'm not loo
sleepy.
Veronika Nagodc - Yes, if I

in conclusion I .would like
to add that R.O.T.C. builds
character in a man The
R.O.T.C. cade( is one who is
able to make friends with just
about anyone. Others know
that the Cadet has been in the
position to lead others; there
fore, they are more likely to
offer their friendship to him.
These last two points can not
be illustrated better than by
Mercer’s military * 1 staff headed

I Hope that more students

these rag t 8g “experts”,

program, for themselves. I per

helped me and I feel that it

interested in improving them

can’t say that I will consec

compulsory, it stimulates
the interest of some stu

last quarter. However, there
may be some students who
would not be interested at
all.
Karl Kronquist It depends
entirely upon the pro

or not attendance is worth
while.
Christine Hood — Yes. if they
have a good programme.
Like the Insight pro
grammes were well worth
attending, because they*
were concerning problems
facing our generation, pro
blems that will be up to us
to find solutions to. If they
have speakers whom I feel
will broaden my views and
will help me to be a better
person.

How The Cluster
Got Its Name
Established in 1920, THE
MERCER CLUSTER has since
been a leader among small-
college student weeklies. The
name of the paper is some
what unusual, and deserves
explanation to those who may
not be familiar with Mercer
history
We quote the following
from Dr. Spright Dowell’s A
History of Mercer University.
He (Jesse Mercer) spent the
year 1799 preaching in South
Carolina, North Carolina and
Virginia. Because of their
respect for his reputation and
character, large congregations
attended his meetings. There
was a lack of hymn books in
the new and growing churches
and to meet the need he
collected and compiled a
volume under the title. The
Cluster of Spiritual Songs,
Divine Hymns, and Sacred
Poems, being chiefly a collec
tion. To meet the popular
demand 9even editions were
-printed. The first was un
bound and was printed in
Augusta in 1813 This was
followed in the same city by a

bound and enlarged edition in
1815 and again in 1816. In
1817, while attending the
Triennial Convention in
Philadelphia, he punished a
revised edition. The* use was
widespread, and other editions
followed in 1820 and 1835.
By 1829, thirty-three thou
sand copies had been distri
buted in Philadelphia alone.
The 1835 edition was the
fifth to be copyrighted.
Thomas, Cowperthwaite, and
Company published it in
Philadelphia and CoDins and
Brother In New York. Two
copies of this edition are de
posited in the Mercer Library.
. .. This book has been
permanently enshrined in The
Mercer Cluster, the student
weekly at Mercer University
since 1920.
