RUN-OFF ELECTION APRIL 14 Charles Bowen I shall address myself to two major areas of concern: 1) Finance — Mercer is ex periencing financial strain. I feel (hat priority should be given first to retention and acquisition of faculty, second to fulfillment of loans and scholarships to students, third to improvement of student facili- V .J ties (ping pong, l.pool, TV Bowen rooms), food services (optional meal ticket), reduction of textbook costs. extension of co-op hours, and fourth to the developmental program including the con struction of new buildings and expansion of departments with special stress being given to music and drama and the addi tion of a business administra tion department. 2) Community — An ad vantage of a smaller school is an enhanced possibility of some degree of unity from which the common benefit of a college education can be applied to society's problems. At Mercer there is a great need for all factions, whether they be black — white or Greek — non Greek to make concessions toward this end. Also the existence of com munity between students, faculty, and administrators is imperative. Faculty and ad ministrators should be con cerned with the interests of students and students should not be apathetic about the ad ministering of their education. Students should havdY voice in these decisions which affect them. Effort confronting these areas of concern and others SGA Vice-President (student retention. Wonderful Wednesday, open dorms) is essential. Toward the solution of these problems and attain ment of these goals, I solicit your support. Charles Bowen Ted Kandler In two years of being a Mer- cerian, I have found that many students are displeased with various facets of the school. These students are not just the ■ Black students, but they include every student who has an in terest in the community of Mercer Univer sity. I believe Kandler that there are three basic areas that the SGA should involve themselves in with a maximum of effort. These areas are Student Rights, Curriculum and Fiscal Review. In exploiting these areas, it is that we continue to make sound proposals to take their place. All year 1 have heard many students voice their lack of faith in the Senate due to the fact that many of its proposals get bogged down in its own committeee-and the red tape of the Administration. In every way that I could as Vice- President this would be my own little red wagon to ramrod SGA committees in to doing more than just forming a com mittee and waiting for nature to take its course. In other words, I want the Senate to work towards accomplishing some of the desires of the stu dents. In the past the office of Vice-President of the SGA could be compared to the office of Vice-President of the United States — a job that has little assigned duties and leaves the V-P to do his own choos ing. Well it to my desire to | change the do-nothingness of • this position and to start by making sure that the three areas mentioned above receive some attention by the SGA Senate. A good question for me to answer now is — How do I pro pose to accomplish these? The biggest obstacle In the effec tiveness of the Senate lies in Communication. If the Senate can communicate to the Stu dent Body what action It Is taking, or why there is no ac tion being taken, then the stu dents can support their action,. or speak out against It. If this sounds like the kind of things that you want done ip the 1970-71 year then I feel that I can be your candidate. Ted Kandler ' •. Sally Fulcher Julian Gordy As a representative for the entire student body, I would work in areas of greater student interest and concern. These areas being academic- administrative and student activities. In the realm of academics there is a need for more re- evaluation and future reorgani v zation in Mercer curriculum. Quarterly student course evalu ation cards will be continued. Reciprocal professor classroom evaluation cards will be added. The combined results then should be known to both stu dents and professors. There fore, a more objective view of the total situation is possible. Future reorganization would include the additions of impor tant professional majors inter jected into the curriculum, for an example, in the much need ed fields of education and physical eduation. To secure present and prospective stu dent enrollment these two fields should be supplemented into the School of Liberal Arts. In order that these measures will be more effective, student and administrative participa tion and cooperation are imperative. Student activities are a necessity to safeguard against stuJbnt apathy. Student apatny is a definite problem that can be corrected by in volvement in campus concerns. These concerns are: Food Ser vices conditions, Infirmary ser vices. and Recreation facilities. As chairman of Food Services Committee I will continue to strive in working with the Administration for non- compulsory meal ticket*. Also, if elected, I would promote better Infirmary services. Being a member of the Recreation Committee, I can see the need for more recreation facilities and would continue to work diligently on this committee. Student involvement Is much needed on this campus and with cooperation from stu dents, these above proposals can become successful realities. Gordy Because I have a vital in terest in the Mercer Communi ty, I have decided to become a candidate for Senator at Large. Factors which influenced my decision were a lack of SGA leadership in academic in volvement and curriculum re form, the poor record of the present SGA in following up projects and com mittee work, and, lastly, pressing need for a realistic approach to campus com munity. I feel that it is high time the good of the communi ty was put above personal political gain or purely partisan interests. It is high time for stu dent leaders to consider Mercer first, then friends, brothers, or sisters. It is high time for stu dents to seriously consider realistic academic reform rather than merely the invalida tion of personally undesirable academic requirements. It is high time SGA projects initiated in committees were carried through to fruition. To these issues I will turn my attention first. It is time for us to get to work. Together we can solve these problems. Join Julian. Elect J. Gordy Senator at Large. Julian Gordy Gail Kline Now that elections have come again it is an opportunity for the entire student body to reevaluate the past SGA and decide whether this year has been a produc tive one in terms of signifi cant change. By significant change I refer to that legislation which has been Kline initiated in order to encourage the best interests of the University but especially of the constituents who each Senator represents. I am not satisfied. I cannot be content with committees that are formed but produce nothing, with the lack of inter action between the Senators and those that elected them. My platform is a simple one, one of change and concern. reevaluate the decide whether i Senator-at Large L. Kicklighter Vote For The Candidate Off Your Choke 1 would like to represent the whole student body as Senator-at-Large because I would like to help and see Mercer expand its scope so it offer more to incoming students and to our present stu dent body. I feel that working to gether as stu dents we can make Mercer Kick tighter more attractive to incoming students. Mercer is not utilizing Its potential. Therefore we are losing many students to state schools. In the academic curriculum there Is a definite need for a re-evaluation. The majors offer ed to students now at Mercer are not adequate to meet the students future needs hence an expansion in new areas Is need ed. Our main concern in re ceiving an education should be geared along academic lines. We as Mercer students must realize that we have a voice in academic structure. This is an indirect voice which can be projected through a petition, or some other means. If Mercer offered more majors in various fields such as elementary education, secon dary education, business ad ministration, and physical edu cation, then upperclassmen would not be forced to attend other schools which offer these majors. This academic barrier also includes the present course requirements. Language and Christianity requirements should be reduced because not all students are interested in these fields and could be taking other courses of their main field. I am aware of other prob lems on our campus such as the food problem, mandatory meal tickets, and infirmary sendees. If elected, I shall also aim to heip correct then* problems to the best of my ability. Lynne Kicklighter Change in the representatives elected; change in the attitudes of the University and the Senate in reference to the stu dent bodies desires and in terests; change in the direction in which SGA functions and its slow workings through com mittees. Change is definitely needed, a general revamping of SGA is essential. New ideas must be conceived and evalu ated. I am concerned and by running for SGA office with the desire to work for change I am showing my concern for the future of Mercer Uni versity. Show your concern and cast your ballot on April 10 and please consider me, Gail Kline for SGA Senator-at- Large. Charlotte Love I have decided to run for Senator at Large as a represen tative of the whole student body. I hope to help solve many of the ;ing problems that face Mercer. How ever, among them I would like to see special emphasis applied to curri- ' culum review. A Love failure to provide adequate business training and an obvious lack of material In the Education, Political Science, Phydcs and Economics Departments leads a number of students to many other colleges. Working together as a united student community, we can make Mercer a more valu able and worthwhile university. Please let me have your help in helping you. Charlotte Love Chris Sullivan When giving my speech for Freshman Senator I stated that the, “I will” in American youth Is just as and possibly more Important than the “1 can.” As a| Senator I I that I hare ful l filled this state-1 ment by rep ■anting my dam I with the bast of I my abllty. My name Is Mike Moonhead. I a eo: •bout our Stu- lent Govern- nent. Ibis year rur Student 3ovarnmant as i whole has loneagood job of fulfilling its One of the moat serious defl- - .. denotes of Mercer, and ooa of objective*, but I tael that the If elected Senator-at-Large I would like to see, among other tMop, more recreational facili- ttas and cafeteria changes (that Is optional meal tickets, etc.,). the least discussed, is the lack of recreation. Recreation la needed to prevent Mercer from becoming solely a “study fac tory''. Mercer needs game rooms, handball courts and the like. Does the Administration call ping pong tables sufficient recreation? Other small colleges have these thinp why does not Mercer. Also, in the short space alio ted, 1 want to briefly men tion the urgency of the op tional meal ticket, optional because some students don’t eat every meal. This results In wasted food and “money down the drain" for the student and this la uncalled for. Finally, I would like to present some questions and answers to enable you to better know me. Why do I Chris Sullivan want to be a Senator-at-Large? My answer to this is that I want to serve the student body of Mercer Univerdty. I want too give instead of just receive. Do I have S.G.A. ex perience? Yea! I am a Senator at present and a member of the Auxilary Services and Evalua tion committees. Do I, Christ Sullivan, seek this office for personal gains? No. My only purpose in running is that I want to help ray fellow students. And in dosing, 1 leave you with one reminder which is — “YOU CAN'T MISS WITH CHRIS". G. Henderson Fellow Students, The time has come for those of us who are Interested in the welfare and the perpetuation of a homogenous relation between students, faulty, and ladmlnistration to present our j selves to you for your judgement on our ability to uphold the office that we seek. This judge ment can he best manifested after a thorough deliberation of what we haw to oflhr. For two yean, I hare trod the Mercer campus and hare seen, along with other stu dents, several gopher holes that need to be ceiled with positive thinking before someone stumbles into an undesirable situation. These holes that I make reference to are most plentiful on the poumk whan the following opposing forces meet: affiliates and imaffl- Hatsa, SGA memfaasa and the student body, and the inform ed and tbs uninformed. There It a greet deal mote thet can be done by each SGA officer If he or she has the interest of the Student Body utmost fa mind. If I am elected Senator*! If we -only had a strong, deter- to keep the enrage eollep stu dent informed about what's happening, and thet was willing to stand together on certain issues than next year could be the yam of change on this campus. A strong Senate Is an a b to lute nseswity for next year's term because there Is going to be Wrong opposition to overcome for us to open our dorms, check our artmtnhtra- tion, do away with some of our color book teachers and to change the thinp that this stu dent body is ready for and, may I my, most deserving of. I believe that I hare the type of strong personality that is needed here now. I will stick behind what I believe but fol low a majority vote with just as much enthusiasm. I am also level headed enough to know that we can only change as much as Mercer is ready to but that this Senate must be able and willing to Initiate these new steps. I want the oppor tunity to help leed the way. Will you, Clam of *71 give me this chance? I solicit your vote in the upcoming elections.
