S.G.A. approves conduct
Harold S. Logan. Mercer's
new Vice President for
Development, said (art
Tuesday. November 24 of Jane
Fonda that “certainly this-great
nation doesn't have to tremble
at its roots if Miss Fonda gets on
a platform and advocates
something that is as pr Uttcaliy
naive as some ot ber
suggestions are.**
"I don't agree with many of
the things she said, " Mr Logan
told this reporter in a special
interview, "but I think in the
interest of Information the.
should be permitted to say
them.”
There are many persons
who will disagree with the
position taken by Idas Fonda on
such contemporary issues as
the war in Viet Nam But that is
the point in any lecture senes
to present a variety of opinion
on a wide range of controversial
subjects.'' be went on
In the course of the interview
Logan saw the role of the
university and as being
primarily to educate and to
serve as a forum for the ex
pression of opinion, talked
about his job as a fund raiser,
and praised President Harris
“The university is the
students . is the faculty.” he
said “certainly the student
interests are primary because
that is the reason for a
university's being here . . to
educate And who do we
educate? Us. all of us but
primarily, this is your time “
Logan confirmed that his job.
like that of his predecessor. Dr
Ralph Phelps, is largely that of
a fund raiser He had high hopes
for the futur e along these lines
“Mercer is going out into the
U S community, and as we are
not s regional and panocial,
institution, we are rvally a
national institution, we are
going out to the country as
whole and asking them to share
the Mercer experience." the
Vice President said
The big contributions, ac
cording to Logan, are “going to
come from busipess and.
foundations and those In-
dividqals who want to do
something special for
education "
However, he also praised the
alumni as being “for its size
quite ger.crous" He said that
contributions from alumni were
increasing and that "this means
a commitment of loyalty to
Mercer snd *t certainly is an
indication tbit it is receiving
the support of the alumni
Assoc is tioo."
Logan called President
Harris “a great university
president “ He said. “He is a
fine academician I can think
of no ooe who would be his peer
and he ia an excellent ad
ministrator And became nf the
