THE MERCER CLUSTER
PACE 3
c\
<\ d
A Bird’s Eye Analysis *
|Of The Presidential Race
The banners are down; the
speeches are over; the polls are
closed; and Mercer has its first
Black SGA president. Before we
move on to a new year, let’s look
at the events of the past few
weeks. No time before has the
“Mercer Community" been
opened up for examination as it
has been in thiselection. The two
candidates brought out the issue
of community on many oc
casions, stressing the importance
of bringing the factions together,
but the election separated the
school in a horrifying manner.
It is hard for me to be totally
objective having just lost, but
there are a few things which stick
out. Kenneth Bryant is a good
man, a good worker, a leader He
won an election against another
good man. For just a moment
let’s pretend; let’s pretend that
ther is no Black white greek, non-
greek, etc. Let’s look at the
issues, or lack of.
On the three major issues
which each candidate spoke of
there are great differences of
opinion. Kenneth spoke up in

favor of the proposed Mercer
medical school, against open
dorms, and against SGA
revisions. I am opposed . to a
medical school at Mercer, for
expanded open (Jorms, and for
major SGA revisions. Here, then,
are the obvious differences. Now,
just looking at the issues, which
of the candidates would one
consider *’liberal" and which
would one con?ider "con
servative’’?’’
Of course one doesn’t always
vote "issues." People do vote
personality, friendship, etc. And
unfortunately people vote Black,
White, "greek," etc., etc., as they
did in Tuesday’s election. IF I
had won the election, the people
that would have elected me would
have been the "no black as SGA
president" "silent majority."
People who disgree with my
views would have elected me just
because I’m a WASP. That’s
disgusting. And just as disgusting
are those people who showed
their "liberal” nature by voting
for a Black. I’m not saying that
ALL the people that voted for me
did so just because I’m white.
Nor am I saying that ALL of
Kenneth's supporters are anti-
white. anti-greek. or anti-
whatever, but I would be a fool
not to realize that there were and
still are factions present. These
people are holding Mercer back.
Community. It’s a big word.
It’s also escaping from our grasp.
Kenneth Bryant has his work cut
out for him, but it’s not just his
work, it's ours. We could sit back
on our asses and let another year
go by, or we could get involved
and show the administration that
we are no longer going to accept
decisions which we find unac
ceptable. It’s up to you. The
man’s Black .. .this man’s white.
Does it really matter? We're all
here for the same reason. As
Mercer students we all want
many of the same objectives such
as an end to Senior Com-
prehensives, better housing,
better athletic facilities, etc
There is only one way—
Community. Work together
Back The Man. It’s the only way.
Some Mercer flying people.

Letters To The Editor
depending upon your faith) a
farce, a tragic comedy of human
errors, an unfortunately con
ceptualized burial ground for
social ignorance and con-
demnable mental immaturity.
Has the past population deemed
to curse its posterity with a
misled and mistaken idea of
importance? Must they have felt
some need would indeed arise
that could be escaped through
this method of (consciousness)
evolution-prevention? If so, it is a
regrettable blockade on human-
thought that must be removed
from the minds of the student
body.
It Must? No, be quiet, don’t tell
them so, please. Yes, you hear
them. What would occur, what
would be fall our placid world of
cloudy fantasy? Would you
become angry? Would we see our
truths at last, and extend our
once-lost capacity toward con
trol?
I am afraid so. Perhaps God
has sent our lords an archangel
or two, to leave word that it would
be "good" (if you do this) and
"bad," which would they prefer?
There would roll a chant ground
the tables, “stupid students,
stupid students, stupid students,"
and yes. they cried, as it was in
the beginning, so shal» it turn,
now!
and the words were spoken.
And the lords later came down,
some no longer our fathers, but
our "frinds," and beneath (yes
beneath) the pretext of
enlevening our mentalites and
expanding our esprits will bend
our unwary and defenseless
sensibilities toward their will,
and describe to us "good" (as in
scholars, or sometimes
revolutionaries)
and "bad." And we, in
our supposed (conceited)
"enlightenment” worship again
our lords as our fathers, whom
we have discovered to be our
truths. And we again sleep
peacefully, still unaware, of even
our unawareness.
Would there be a revolution?
They have assured themselves
not. Our energies have been
carefully (thought easily)
directed toward stifling our own
revolution. What have they to do
when we police ourselves. We
have subordinated ourselves to
their groupings (though there be
only one) and refuse to accept our
fellows that do not conform. Oh,
yes, but we are nonconformists,
aren’t we? Damn right!
We are more molded than the
third assistant secretary to the
fourth secretary of the second
vice-president. We are such a
caste, that we have become
unable to see it. We are an at
tempt at a (past, incidentally)
society that was so far ahead of
its time that to live in such an
unreasonable facsimile, a ver-
tiable caricature is so incredibly
futile that each of the citizens of
today, the deviants are frustrated
into either suicidal or homicidal
insanity (at least we never settle
to be sublimated into vegetation,
grace a dieu).

to inform you of the latest local
entertainment opportunities, this
reporter risked life and limb last
week and went skydiving. Now
this may strike you as being
rather crazy, and I must admit. I
really didn't know about it myself
when I decided to go; but as they
say, you only go around once. So.
myself and nine other intrepid
Mercer students decided to defy
gravity and fly.
We piled into two cars and
drove up to the Greene County
Sport Parachute Center for out
first jump. When we arrived, we
were issued jump suits and
combat boots afor our training
session. Our instuctor took us out
to a wooden frame which is built
to resemble an airplane floor,
door and wing; and proceeded to
teach us how to jump. Now this is
no easy undertaking. You can’t
just "jump out." There is a
sequence of motions that you
must go through in preparation of
eventual free fall jumps.
I guess at this time, I should
distinguish between jumps.
Your first five jumps are called
static line jumps because there is
a cord attached to your
parachute which opens it for you.
This is really nice because you
don't have to do anything except
be brave. After you've gotten the
feel of jumping, you progress to
free fall jumps, on which you pull
your own ripcord. You gradually
increase the delay time until you
can free fall up to 30 seconds;
then you're on your own.
Anyway back to the in
struction. We were shown how to
get into the plane with our 35
pounds of equipment strapped on,
which proved to be easier said
than done. Once inside the plane,
we found out how to sit and move
this we moved on to bigger and
better things; namely jumping
out of the plane. When you jump
out. your body must immediately
go into an arch with arms and
legs outstretched. This prevents
spinning and tumbling, which has
a nasty habit of tangling you in
your chufe.
Moving right along we then
were shown how to deal with the
various types of malfunctions.
These fall into three categories:
first is the total, which is self-
t**plan t alory; second is the
streamer, which is what they call
it when you look up and see your
chute looks like atail because it
didn’t inflate; third is the Mae
West, called that because
something has caused the canopy
of the chute to divide into
separate pockets, which causes
you to spin, not to mention
causing you to fall too fast;
anyway, these two pockets form
a rather large bra-shape —hence
the name.
We reviewed these emergency
procedures until we didn’t want
to see another parachuie. They
did come in handy as you will see
later. Next on the agenda was the
PLF, better known as the
parachute landing fall. This
started during WWII, when the
Army found that most of its early
paratroopers broke something
when they hit the ground. Now we
all know that the Army tries to
save money when they can, and
men cost money, so they
developed the PLF. It’s really a
very obvious way to absorb the
shock over five different parts of
your body. Take my word for it,
you'll begladthey show it to you
before you jump.
Next came the part which

LEGAL BRIEFS - Notes From The Law School- By Ron Mack Correspondent
On Friday, May 4th, 1973, the
Student Bar Association of the
Walter F. George School of Law
at Mercer University will join
with law schools throughout the
nation in observance of LAW
DAY, U.S.A. The theme for this
year's Law Day is "Help Your
Courts Assure Justice”..
As represented by House Joint
Resolution No. 32 of the 87th
Congress, Law Day is a "s
special day of celebration bv the
American people in appreciate,
of their liberties and the reaf
firmation of their loyalties to the
United States. . . ; of their re
rededication to the ideal of
equality and justice under law in
thei relationships with each other
as ell as with other nations.” As
we realize that the Ideal has not
yet been achieved, this special
day is set aside for citizens to
reflect on the working of the
present system and evaluate it in
order to recognize areas which
are in need of improvement. The
problems are often large and
many, and they cannot be solved
by law students alone, nor even
by the legal profession alone. But
by working together, and by
attempting to make all people,
both in and out of the profession
continually aware of the problem
areas which do exist, we can
effectively contribute to the
construction of ever higher
plateaus in our constant attempt
to reach the pinnacle of ideal
American justice.
The law is a human thing,
created by men and designed to
serve them. In order for our
nation's courts to assure equal
jusLce under the law for all men.
it is necessary to have strong
public support, and the
realization that the judiciary
must remain an entirely in
dependent body in order to
protect our basis constitutional
safeguards.
Because 1973 marks the 100th
Anniversary of the founding of
Mercer’s Law School, there is to
a special celebration em
phasizing its history. There will
be a Registration at 9:30 AM in
the Law School Bobby, followed
by a reception in the Law
Student Lounge which will honor
the past Deans of the Law School.

(present Dean of the Law
School), Sam A. Beatty, James C.
Quarles, D. Meade Field,' Elvin
E. Overton, W.A. Beetle, and
Rufus C. Harris wij^atttend the
reception.
At 10:30 AM in the State Moot
Court Teams will present
argument on “The Con
stitutionality of the Self- Help
Provision of the Georgia
Uniform Commercial Code (Sec.
109A-9-503) before a panel of
Federal judges in the Moot Court
Room. At 11:30 AM an alumni
meeting is scheduled, which will
be followed by a Luncheon at
12:30 PM in the Connell Student
Center. The Honorable Benning
M. Grice, President Justice of the
Supreme Court of Georgia will
be the luncheon speaker.
Following this full day of ac
tivities, the Annual Barristers'
Ball will be held jn the Macon

James W. Smith, Chairman of the
SBA Social Committee has given
his assurance that a large turnout
is expected at this formal event.
I should like to thank per
sonally, and on behalf of the
entire law school Dan Finch,
SBA President, Nick Church,
Chairman of the Law Day
Committee, and all of the-many
others who have planned and
worked so hard to make this Law
Day celebration a very special
one. Their fine efforts in this
major undertaking should not go
unrecognized or unrewarded, and
they are all due hearty thanks for
a job well done!
Special
congratulations are in order to
