INA Building For Law School
Mercer will acquire the presti
gious Insurance Company of
North America Building stop

agreement put together by
Mercer alumnus Ro <ert L Steed,
member of the special committee
which handled arrangements for
the transaction.
President Rufus C. Hams said
the transaction represents a
generous contribution by INA of
the major value of the building.
Mercer is paving SI million for
the property which has been
appraised at 44 million. The
remaining S3 million is a gift from
INA to Mercer.
Though Mercer will take
possession of the property on
January 1. it will be some months
before the Law School actually
moves into the building, pending
interior modifications.
Located at 1021 Georgia Aven
ue. the 90,300 square foot
building was completed in 1965
for S2 million and is one of the
most imposing structures io
Georgia.
The three-story Georgia Co
lonial building features a replica
of the tower and dock at •
Independence Hall where the
Insurance Company of North
America was founded in 1792.
The 15 columns in front of the
building represent each of the
states which formed the United
States at that time.

Appointed
The appointments of eight new
members of the Mercer faculty
has been announced by President
Rufus C. Harris. All are effective
at the fall quarter.
Dr. Barbara Jane Nicholson of
Eactoo. Calif, has been named to
the position of assistant professor
in the education department.

Dr. Nicholson received the
bachelor of art* degree and
master of arts degree at the
University of California at Los
Angeles and earned both the
Ed.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the
University of Georgia
Scbwartzkopf received both the
mater of music degree in choral
conducting and the bachelor of
music education degree with
voice concentration from Indiana
University.
Both the bachelor of music and
master of music degrees were
earned by Nelson at the Univer
sity of Cincinnati College Corner
v story of Music. Vance received
both the bachelor of music
education and the master of
education degrees from Florida
State University. The oew univer
sity organist. Mrs. Page, holds
both the bachelor of music and
master of music degrees from the
University at Kentucky.
Dr. Kowlowitz received' the
bachelor of arts degree in
psychology and mathematics
from Queens College, and the
Ph.D. degree in experimental
psychology from the University of
North Carolina at Chapd Hill

tion of the building said. "This is
s marvelous opportunity for
Mercer and its Walter F. George
School of Law.
"It will enable the Law School
to increase its enrollment from its
present 250 to 425. allowing
Mercer to substantially increase
its longstanding commitment and
contribution to excellence in legal
education."
President Rufus C. Harris
announced that Mercer received a
renewal grant of S79.500 from
ACTION for the 1976-77 Univer
sity Year for Action (UYA)
program which has 30 students
engaged in full time volunteer
community service m public and
private nonprofit agencies.
The federal grant provides for
continuation of Mercer's UYA
program for a third year. The
total UYA budget at Mercer is
almost $100,006 for .he year.
$79,500 of which is provided by
the federal grant and the
remaining $19,876 funded by
Mercer.
Dr. Louis D. Becker coordin
ates the UYA’program in which
students serve off campus as
volunteers, helping the poor in
urban and rural low-iocome
communities move toward solving
their problems.
Initiated June 1. 1974 at
Mercer with an operational grant
of $54,000 in federal funding.
UYA has proved highly success
ful. Earlier in October of 1973. the
University received an operation
al planniog grant and after six
months. Mercer was the only
college in Georgia to be awarded
the operational grant. Later
Morris Brown College in Atlanta
received such a grant.
UYA indudes approximately
2000 students from 60 campuses
around the country. Community
organizations, in cooperation with
the participating university, de- ‘
fine jobs, supervise and train the
volunteers.
Dean Search Committee
Considers Nominees

The Faculty and Dean Search
Committee, under the direction of
Professor Eugene Bell has been
working since S,r.tng Quarter to
fill the position of Dean of the
College of Liberal Arts. The
position «vas left vacant by the
retirement of Dr. Garland P
Taylor, who is presently serving
in an interim capacity until his
replacement may be found.’
According to Professor Bell, over
one-hundred applications have
been received by the committee.

While on duty early Tuesday
morning. September 28. Capt.
Henry Grady Healy. shift super
visor for Mercer Security, died of
a massive coronary.
Heal, had been employed by
Mercer since 1959. He served m
World War U. in the Coast Guard.
He is survived by his wife. Helen
Kent Healy. three daughters.
four sisters, and four brothers.
Capt. Healy was bom November
It. 1911.

requested to be boned in his
Mercer Security uniform. Capt.
Healy will be greatly missed by
the entire Mercer community
