Caroly n Stewart-Acting Dean
By W.J
For the remainder of Fall
Quarter. Dean of Students. Ed
Bacoo. will be finishing graduate
work toward a master's degree in
theology at Emory University in
Atlanta. These intense studies
will keep him from the Mercer
campus until early Winter Quar
ter. Ms. Carolyn Steward! pre
sently the Counselor tq Women,
will serve as acting Dean of
Students until Dean Bacon .is
again able to assume the duties.
Carolyn, as she is called by
many Merccrians. is a graduate
of Auburn University and holds a
masters degree in counseling
from the University of Georgia.
For two years she was assistant
Counselor to women before she
was promoted to the head job five
years ago. Since her arrival at
Mercer, she has enjoyed the
reputation of being one of the
most energetic person on cam
pus. Carolyn feels that her
academic training, her close
working relationship with Dean
Bacon and her seven years
experience with students at
Mercer, best qualify her for the
temporary position, and she is
quite optimistic about Fall Quar-
SDA Department Moves
To Tatnall Square Building
By D.R
The Speech and Dramatic Art
Dept. (SDA) now has a beautiful
new home. Mercer's most rapidly
growing dept, was extremely
cramped and had absolutely no
room for expansion in it's old
location, the Hardman Building:
work has been going on all
summer to convert the old Tatnall
Building at© suitable accomoda
tions. The result is remarkable,
and the SDA Dept, has every right
to be proud of it. What was once a
musty and rarely used building
has now been comp'etely con
verted to contain comfortable
office space for the SDA faculty,
two large 15 seat classrooms, a 25
seal classroom, a 12 scat seminar
room, and a multi-purpose
seminar room, which can
accomodate 24 people at large
tables and can be used for
conferences, special seminars,
and faculty and/or student
functions. The building also
induces a speech improvement
lab with a control room, better
equipment, and twice as many
units as .he old lab. a debate
workshop, a costume workshop,
and the newest feature of the
dept., a television studio with a
control room. 2 color cameras,
and much other equipment. The
lab and the T.V. studio i ere both
funded by Federal Grants under
Title 6. Funds were matched by
Mercer.
Almost all the area, including
classroom*. is covered with a
warrn-colored carpet, and a
carefully planned d-.cor generates
a warm, cheerful atmosphere that
offsets the effects of the sub-level
location of roost of the area.
Plants, paintings: and curtains
add to the friendly environment.
The Dept, has hired two new
N faculty members: Mr. Fred
Church is the new debate coach,
and Mr. Henry Roubichek is the
Ass. Director of Theater and will
also specialize in mass media.
The Art Dept, will now use the
vacated space in the Hardman
Building. Other depts. will share
classroom space with the SDA
Dept, in the converted tatnall
Building.
The SDA Dept, is very proud of
its new accomodations and invites
everyone to stop by and look
around*
Ad. Huihlinfi Under Construction
Mercer students returned to
the campus for the 1976 fall
quarter to find the historic
Administration Building restored
to its original grandeur — oo the
outside.
Its spires, towers and other
roofline oraamentaton glistened
bnghtly in the sun. The brick and
mortar of its exterior walls had
/been carefully refurbished and
sealed against the elements, and
the wooden trim around doorways
and windows, as well as the
wooden side porches sported
bright new coats of paint.
But inside was another story
On the upper levels, floors still
sagged, plaster still flaked away
from already gaping holes in the
walls and ceilings, and through
out the building were evidences
of the years of need and neglect.
The exterior restoration project
has been completed, at a coat of

Although she is anticipating
enjoying this brief period. Caro
lyn says she has no ambitions of
becoming Dean on a full time
basis. She recently began work
ing on her PH D in counseling
and says she would prefer to
finish requirements for that
degree at this time.
V$ben asked if students could
expect an administrative change
in policy during Dean Bacon's
absence. Carolyn said. “NO. our
(Dean Bacon's and hers) philo-
sphies on education arc very
close. I intend to be as
understanding and as fair as
possible." Carolyn expects no
major difficulties, but. she has
been i mnsdor long enough to
know how unpredictable the job
remains. Sitting, legs crossed, at
her desk, a relaxed smile on her
face. Carolyn added a few more
words "No one could guess the

many may think, but. I love it. I
