Corruption Dealt A Hard Blow By Schorr
By Nka Stefaemets
A Kellie Cannon
"I guess If I wars stall on the
air...I would my that the whole
(Presidential) campsign seems
to be ■ matter of America’s fear
of the unknown versus Ameri
can’s fear of the known.”
The statement comes from a
man who has come to know
Washington politics inside-out
in the past four years. Daniel
Schorr, last Monday's Insight
spraker and recently resigned
CBS news correspondent, dis
cussed various aspects of the
corruption and the covert
activities in Washington. He
specifically emphasised his
belief in the Constitutionality of *
the public's 'right to snow.”
A humorous and excellent
Schorr gave an intri-
of the events
leading up to his subpoena to
appear before Congress in
September, and the resulting
contempt of Congress chargee.
He refused to divulge the
source of the Pike Committee's
Report on the CIA. The report
was approved for release by the
Congress one week in January:
the approval was withdrawn the
next week. Meanwhile. Schorr
had obtained a copy and
released it through The Village
Voice, after CBS refused to
publish it.
CBS suspended Schorr in
February, and last month, he
resigned. He said in his lecture
that, because of his almost
heroic image with the public,
CBS may have been considering
putting him back on the job. “I
felt for a long time they had not
shown sufficient confidence in
me and that now I didn’t have
sufficient confidence in them,
and 1 simply said I wanted to
quit." Later, during questions
from the audience, Schorr was
asked it he felt CBS had let him
down. His answer: “yes."
Schorr, being very candid
with the capacity crowd, dis
cussed several of the known
convert activities of the CIA. In
Cuba, in Greece, even here
Schorr said, this agency is
