and followed by scoring three
touchdown# to take the lead
with about five^ minutes re
maining in the game.
The final game between ATO
and Sigma Nu was to be played
Thursday. ATO baa a victory
over the Snakes - during the
regular season v ho they finished
first and the Snakes second in
the Greek division.
The M'jrcer Teddy Bears
were featured in the November,
1976 imoe of Wom»n8porta,
published by Billie Jean King.
The following is a reprint of that
article in part.
In the meantime, it looks like
another good year for the "Utile
guys." And the best of the little
guys are Delta State. Tennessee
Tech. Mercer, and Immanilata.
The dark-bores contender for
the title this season is Mercer
University of Macon, Georgia.
The Teddy Bears are led by
Olympian Cindy Brogdoo. a
6* 11" forwrrd who does
everything on a Basketball court
but seU programs. Brogdon
rewrote the Murcer record
books last season, averaging
over 30 points per game,
scoring 900 points for the
season, and averaging over 40
points per game during the
regional playoff*.
The Teddy Bears employ s
'run-and-gun attack with Hilda
Heard leading the fast break.
Charlotte Nicholson, who aver
aged 13 rebounds per game last
year, teams with Brogdon to
provide the board strength so
vital to a rrmnteg «pme.
Mercer coach Peggy Collins
sought height this year to
complainant her team's speed
snd found it in Dee Hazel (6’7"1
and Shirley MacIntyre (6’8V«"|.
Mercer’s weakness in the past
has been s porous defense, but
If either of the tall women works
out. the Teddy Bears will be
tighter defensively — if for no
other reason than that a 6'7"
player tends to intimidate the
opposition.
One factor that could hurt the
Teddy Bears is their weak
schedule. TTiis is not a case of
playing Bear Bryant politics
(stacking a schedule with
inferior opponents in order to
get a high national ranking), it
is simply a reflection of the lack
of good teams in the Georgia
