On Dec T! thru 30, the-24th National Convention of Alpha Phi
Omega convened in Atlanta at the Marriott Hotel. In attendance
were more than 1200 chapter delegatee, alumni, board members
and guests from all over the United 9taies and Puerto Rico.
Prom Mercer, and representing Delta Iota Chapter were:.Ron
Gay, Wayne Purdue, Gerald Brogdon. Benji Parrish. Larry
Brownlee. Jeff Dean, Bill Marett. Gary Russell, David Thompson,
and Willie Jenkins. The brothers of Deha Iota were charged with
the responsibility of registering all in coming delegates and
insuring that the entire enrollment process moved expiditiously.
The brothers received several compliments from incoming
delegates and convention officers on their handling of the
Important issues considered at the convention were proposals to
change the. national by-laws to accomodate vote of the sectional
chairman, to change the number of votes required to amend the
by-laws from three-fourths to two-thirds, a motion to adopt the
Golden Eagle as the fraternity bird, and paramount on every
delegate's mind was the issue of Title-IX of the 1972 Education Act
and its implications toward women in the fraternity. It was decided
by the convention that individual chapters would have the
opportunity to decide whether or not women would be allowed 2s
members of their particular chapter.
The brothers of Delta Iota benefited much from the various
developmental seminars conducted by the national convention staff
and thoroughly enjoyed the fellowshiping with brothers from other
chapters. —
Delta lota was honored several times by the convention. Also, it
was the recipient of four swards from the national office. It received
two H.Roe Bartle' awards -representing Superior Chapter
Performanre and Administration, the National "Serve. More
Students Award”, and a certificate in recognition of Delta lota’s
30th Anniversary on Mercer’s Campus.
Everyone in attendance agreed that the convention was a
complete success, and optimistically look forward to the 1978
National Convention which will be held in Nashvitte, Tennessee.

The Brothers of Iota Eta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
Inc. presented their second annual Black and Gold Coronation
Friday evening, January 14, 1977 in the Trustees Kining Room of
the Connell Student Center.
Nineteen beautiful young ladies were presented to the public as
the Sweetheart Court of 1976-77. Miss Kathy Bryant. Miss lots Eta
1975- 76, made her final walk before Miss Geraldine Bod die, a
freshman biology major from Waverly Hall. Ga., who was crowned
Miss Iota EUJ«>76-77.
In the Miss Black and Gold contest, Miss Sabriqa V. Boykins, a
freshman Chemistry major from ThomasviUe, Ga., and Miss
Annette Boddie. a freshman English major from Waverly Hall.
Ga., competed for the title in evening gown, swimsuit, r*iif»l ware,
and talent competition. After tabulation of the votes by the judges.
Miss Sabrina V. Boykins was crowned Miss Black and Gold
1976- 77.
Mr. James Banks provided the music for the occasion, and Ms.
Denise Clayton rendered a beautiful solo.
The Coronation was termed a huge success and enjoyed by all
who attended. The Black and Gold Dance followed the Coronation
at Family lu on Riverside Dr.
University. The main purpose of
the Order of Omega is to
recognize fraternity men who
have attained a high standard of
leadership in inter fraternity
activities, to encourage them to
continue along this line, and to
inspire others to strive for
similar conspiexms attainment.
Membership is made up of
students, faculty, alumni, and
honorary. To be eligible for
membership, a student must be
of junior or senior standing, and
rank academically above the
all-fraternity average of the
system where he k a student.
The Order of Omega will
sponsor such activities as Greek
Week, Interfraternity Scholar
ship programs, community ser
vice projects, and the like.
The officers of the Alpha Pi
Sigma Nu
The Snakes of Eta Chapter, Sigma Nu Fraternity are preparing
for an eventful winter quarter. New officers have been-elected.
They are: Bill Hardison, Commander; Chris Geiger. Lt.
Commander: Lee Meadows, Recorder; and Wynn Kallay,
Treasurer. Many parties and other activities are being planned to
keep the Snake.' active and in good spirit*.
Five new Little Sisters were named - during the annual
Champaing Christmas Gals. They are: Linda Roberts, Rhonda
McCiendoa. Xiommy Gcazalea. Pam Sheriff, and Kathy Henckel.
Plana are also bei^.g finalized for our trip to the Sigma Nu
National Headquart jts in Lexington, Va. The site of our founding,
Virginia. Military Academy will also be visited. The northward
excursion is to occur Jan. 26-30. Plana for White Star are also being
finalized, idle Hour Country Cfub has been se’ected as the location
for the April 29 bell.
The Pledge Claris busy finalizing (dans for the Pledge-Brothers
Dance Feb. 19. Anticipation is keen for the initiation of Eta-1000,
our 1000th initiate.. The hocur will be beer owed upon this year’s
Model Pledge.
Sportswise, the Snakes are in good position in the race for the
All-Sports trophy with basketball beginning. Winter quarter
promises to be an eventful one for Sigma Nu.
