In the recent election, th* student body wa* «pltt on the iau* of
the Death Penalty. While the Mercer vote ehowa leva support for
the death penalty than the National Polia (Gallop ehows 0b % of the
people support the death penalty), it is eurpriein* to see so many
people at Mercer openly support it.
Mercer claims to be a "lighthouse of Christian Culture," yet
support of the Death Penile ;oea against the teachings of the New
Testament. Jesus specifically set aside the Old Teatan enl Law of
"an eye foe an eye, and a tooth for a tooth" by saying, “I say unto
you. Love your enemies, pray for them, and do them good. So shall
you be children of your Heavenly Father."—
The Old Testament required that a m-.-tan convicted of adultery
should be stoned to death. Preeent when tho penalty was shout to
be enacted, Jesus urged that a person without sin should cast the
first stone. Here we get a dear idea of how Jesus would have his
people respond to the imposition of the death penslty.
All of us at Mercer should reconsider our positions on the Death .
penalty. Wa should put aside til of the emotional responses, cast
sway our prejuduced and fears, and see the path that the Master
has trod. "Go." Jesuajaid, “and learn what that means. I desire
mercy, and not sacrifice."

On .January 24. the Senate of the Student Government
Association passed a resolution calling for the reinstatement of rail
passenger service through the Macon area by Amtrack. This was of
concern to the student body because many students live great
distances from Mercer, and the availability of relatively
ifiavpawnva transportation would be beneficial to them, it also
would make Mercer mjora attractive to ,~oepective students who
otherwise would not think of Mercer because d the travel involved.
Pursuant to the resolution, we have sent t copy of the resolution
and a cover letter explaining our reasons for supporting it to
various groups and officials at the local, state, and federal levels.
Wa have also been in contact with other groups and Mudsnt
governments interested in Amtrack service for this area. You can
help. too. Just write your Congressman or Senator. It may aave you

This protest promoted the
Intramural Department to inve
stigate the eligibility of the
players. This investigation
proved that certain players were
not on the team roster at the
time of the game, aud were thus
ineligible. 11x18 resulted in an
infraction of the rules ang the
forfeiture of the game. It was
quite obvious who bad the

night, but that does ndt make
up for, as you put it, "a slight
oversight" in following the
rules. Your organization made
the "oversight,’’ not us. As you
know, the correct procedure
was not followed, therefore the
consequences resulted. Your
