January 24. and Wednesday. Januray 25. The conference will be held in the Trustees’ Dining Room from 7:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. -10:00 p.m. on Wednesday. All students are invited to participate in the program. Cost of attending the conference is $2.00. Mercer University for the first time in the history is going to court to collect. • ’ Already eight suits have been filed in Bibb County to collect delinquent student loans,*’ said W. Newton Moore, assistant university attorney, “and future loan appropriations through the federal government depend on our success in loan collections. This is a revolving fund, and serious debts have been accumulated. The primary focus of the court action at this time is collection of delinquencies on the National Direct Student Loan Program, although this procedure is also being used for collection of all university indebtedness. Moore said. The University is being forced to assume a different posture than in the past when a more lenient approach was taken with regard to loan defaults. 'This change in posture has been mandated by federal regulations be cause of a growing nationwide problem of delinquencies,’’ Moore said. “The federal government is now actively pursuing through the Justice Depart ment judicial settlement against student debtors where local action fails to provide for full satisfaction of the indebtedness. Continued on page 3 Debaters Do Well In Holiday Tournaments^ Gerald Brogdon and Ronald Hill, Mercer University varsity debaters, received second place and runner-up status in the DSR-TKA National Forensic Honorary Fraternity Regional Debate Tournament held January 11-14 at the University of Alabama. Member universities from throughout the south competed for honors, including debaters from Alabama. Mississippi. Tennessee. North Carolina, South Carolina. Florida, Kentucky and Geor gia. Mercer lost in the finals to Vanderbilt University. Hill was named third speaker in the tournament. Mercer was ranked-fifth overall in the New \ear’s Invitational Tournament at Florida Technological University De bate teams from across the United States competed. William Slagle of Mercer s speech and dramatic art department is coach of the debate team Mercer Students Hit The Slopes More than fifty students packed their gear for Beech Mountain Ski Resort last Tuesday, leaving at 1:00 p.m. and returning late Wednesday night. The trip was sponsored by Student Activities and personally organized by Whit Hollis, Director of Student Activities. Hollis said, “It was great! It even snowed some that night while we were there.” Because of the road conditions it f ook the group seven hours to reach the resort in Banner Elk. N.C. Each individual paid 48.00 for skis and one day of skiing, and 47.50 contributing towards the motel rooms. Most students bought meals, but Mercer provided sandwiches for those on the meal plan Two additional ski trips are tentatively planned for February 7th and 8th and February 21st and 22nd.
