THE MUSICAL BOX
By Rick Nhrs
Discs That Deserve Your Attention
KARLA BONOFF b, k^u Bonoff ■
A recent press release for Karla Bonoff s debut album described it as "a
combination of quiet sensitivity and intelligence." That is an understatement.
Karla’s music contains a personal intimacy rarely seen in the music business today.
Her lyrical and vocal treatment is sensitive and almost painfully passionate, as some
of her dee >est feelings are put into words. It is a rare gift to have such songwriting
talent, bu. most importantly, she has the emotional conviction to. sing what she
writes, like no one else could.
Karla’s dreamy, passionate voice is very delicate, and produces a romantic
vulnerability that will gently break your heart. Producer Kenny Edwards deserves a
hand for putting her delicate voice onto the album unharmed. He also deserves credit
for the album's arrangements, which are dynamic, but not in an overpowering way
da Rfcost«dt|. ^
Karla s lyrics are beautiful and are full of many romantic images, particularly in
Fallin Star” and "Rose in the Garden’*. Many of the images and ideas are subtle
yet easily understood. Her narrative sense and vocal style make her songs
emotionally accesible to a degree rarely seen or felt. This album should have a
profound effect on anyone with a soft heart, for there is true beauty in the simple and
delicate things in life, and musically, Karla Bonoff possesses both these qualifies in a
way that is breathtaking. This album is truly an emotinal work of art. Probably the
album of 1977.
* Choice Cota. "I Can’t Hold On," Lose Again," "If he’s Ever Near," "Falling
Star", and "Rose In The Garden."
The album is currently # 162 on the Billboird Charts.
