The intramural leagues are
becoming more hotly contested
as some of the league leaders
are being scheduled to play
against each other. Last week’s
scheduled spotlighted seven
teams that had to put undefeat
ed records on the line. Some of
them, of course, no longer have
a zero in the loss column.
It finally happened in the
Greek league last week. The
“one we’ve been waiting for”
became a reality as SAE
squared off against Kappa
Sigma. The game was rather
tense for the entire 40 minutes.
An early flurry of points by
Kappa Sigma made vain efforts
of anything the SAE team could
do in the second half. Kappa
Sigma now shares its 5 and 0
record with Omega Psi Phi who,
as usual ^ is having an outstand-
J ing season. .-With a 4 and 1
record SAE is far from being out
of playoff contention. A loss by
j either of the two undefeated
teams would, again, throw the
j* standings into a knot.
£ The Independent I league no
longer has an undefeated team
as the OD’s finally suffered a
loss, compliments of the White
Boys. This throws the OD’s into
a tie for the lead as they share a
4 and 1 record. Helter Skelter
can move into a tie for the lead
next'week with a win because
the OD’s and Gunners lock
horns on Thursday night. One
of them will go to 4 and 2.
^Another big one to watch in
Independent I.
The Independent fl league
saw one of its undefeated
squads acquire a loss last week
when the Bologna Bombers
pulled out a win over Panthers
III in an exciting overtime

by Jerry Holdeo
The Mercer baseball team is
working hard in preparation' for
its contest against the returning
alumni on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Not only will the game prove to
be fun aa it will also give the
Bears some valuable game
experience as they prepare for
their season opener in about a
J week. The team is hoping for a
large spectator turn-out in
{ hopes that their performance on
Saturday will be nothing 4 ’ less
j. than exceptional. The season is
j almost here, fans, so stroll on
t down to the field tomorrow for
’ Bears Head your sneak preview of the 1979
edition of Mercer Baseball
game. The Bombers now share
a 4 and 0 record with the
Kaniggets. Both of them must
g£t two more wins in order to
secure playoff spots. Panthers
IH can only hope for one of them
to lose before they can reenter
the playoff picture.
The playoffs are to be held on
reu. co, marcn
will include the top two teams
from each league and two
wildcard teams to be selected at
random. There are games to be
played in the meantime, how
ever, that make it anything but
clear as to who these eight
teams will be.
Men’s Intramural Basketball showed
hard-fought battles.
What Is A Boxer?
by Mike Cranford
A boxer is a person who is
willing to train and push himself
to the limits of his physical
endurance in an effort to win
over another man who has
pushed himself to his limits.
Boxing is a sport where there
is only one chancy to show
yourself and others that you are
capable of participating in one
of the toughest contests ever.
The match lasts only six
minutes but it's the longest six
minutes of any athletes career.
There are no time outa, you
jCfn't send in replacements, it’s
just you and another man. toe to
toe. Even though there is ’
another man in the ring, your
opponent, a boxer is basically
alone in his effort and the only
thing that keeps him going is
the support, from his peers and
the roar of the crowd.
There’ are 36 contestants in 10
different weight categories al
ready signed up that go to
Porter gym four nights a week
to train and spar in preparation
for the upcoming Mercer
ural Boxing Champkm-
shipa. Boxing as an intramural
sport is different from other
intramural sports in that every
participant will receive an
award or trophy. It is an
individual's effort on behalf of
an organization and it is
imperitive that each organiza
tion and the school as a whole,
students and teachers, give
every boxer total support.
If your baseball or basketball
team loses, you can blame your
teammates but in boxing you
have no one to blame but
yourself This is the reason why
it takes special courage for a
man to get into a 20 foot ring
and attempt to use his strength
and cunning to outpoint another
man in front of his friends. In
my estimation there , are never
any losers in boxing, the mere
fact that you have accepted the
challenge makes you a winner.
Support the Mercer Boxing
Team, on February 23 and 24-at
Porter gym Show them that you
have school spirit and that you
truly believe in the slogan; it’s
not whether you win or. lose but
hvw you play the game.
