“Snatchers” Has Body
Leonard Nimoy in “Body
Snatchers".
by Stere Reed
Science fiction has finally
come full circle.
These glimpses of the future
achieved their greatest popular
ity in the 1950’s. Most of them
were pretty light and ridiculous
with an occasional bit of
intelligence like Day the Earth
Stood Still or Forbidden Planet
to break up the monotony.
One of the thought-provoking
films of that era was a 1956 Don
Siegal film called Invasion of
-'tbe^Qpdy Snatchers.
It only seems fitting that in
this age of R2 : D2 and Close
Encounters mashed potatoes
that Invaaion of the Body
Snatchera would return to
provide an intellectual diversion.
The Robert H. Solo produc
tion is neither a remake nor a
sequel. U adds psychological
overtones and explores in
greater depth the novel by Jack
Finney.
Body Snatchers is set in San
Francisco, an appropriate loca
tion for such an unusual tale
with* an occasional bit of
since many of that city's
residents appear to have come
from another world. The film
deals primarily with Elizabeth
Driscoll (played by Brooke
Adams), an employee for the
Health Department who is
disturbed by her lover's strange
behavior. He has become cold
and distant and frequently
sneaks out for mysterious
meetings with a rather bizarre
new circle of "friends."
Liz and her boes (Donald
Sutherland) become convinced
that her bedfellow has been
duplicated by a pod from
another planet but have difficul-
initialiy. selling the idea to a
renowned psychiatrist (Leonard
Nimoy) who believes that there
is a logical explanation for these
occurances.
W. D. Richter spent nearly
six months doing research for
Body Snatchera and his diligent
work is reflected in the
screenplay. His script is ex
tremely believable and chilling
ly thought-provoking.
Director Philip Kaufman
keeps the film moving at a fairly
rapid pace and seldom drags in
his execution.
The Dolby System adds to the
realism of Body Snatchers as
the viewer is literally engulfed
by a mesmorizing Denny Zeitlin
score and frightening audio and
visual effects,
The main strength of Invaaion
of the Body Snatchers, however,
lies in the perfornlances of its
stars, most notably Sutherland.
, Adams, and Nimoy.
Invaaion of the Body Snatch
era provides Donald Sutherland
with his best role since
M*A*S*H. He is totally con
vincing as Health Department
investigator Matthew Bennell.
Brooke Adams is excellent as a
woman trying to cope with a
situation that she doesn’t
understand. One can sense her
characters state of bewilder
ment as a result of what’s
happening to her.
However, my favorite per
formance in Body Snatchers is
the one given by Leonard Nimoy
as Dr. David Kibner. Now^
hopefully, people will Anally
start recognizing him as some
thing besides the guy with the
pointy ears on Star Trek. He is a
versitile artist who has perform
ed in productions ranging from
Fiddler on the Roof to Equus
since leaving the’ starship
Enterprise. Nimoy is also an
accomplished poet, musician,
and photographer and is given
ample opportunity to display his
acting ability in Body Snatchers.
Invasion of the Body Snatch
ers is a superb Aim from all
aspects. If your palate craves
the unusual, then you owe it to
yourself to see it.
LSO Delights
by Rick Niva N
London Symphony Orchestra:
"Claasic Rock, Volume One".
After listening to this album,
it seems it’s only purpose would
be to provide something new for
those poor people who are
"hooked" on Muzak Stations
like WCRY.
When I think of "classic
rock", or more specifically
classically-oriented rock, I tend
to think of groups like The
Strawbs; Yes; Emerson. Lake,
and Palmer; Genesis; Barcky
James Harvest; Renaissance;
and the Moody Blues, among
others. Yet, among these
groups listed, only a Moody
Blues song appears on the
album. Instead, what ia served
up is some orchestrated ver
sions of some major hit singles
from the past decade or so.
I found it particularly amus
ing that the London Symphony
chose to only do songs by
English artists. I found it even
more amusing that they at
tempted an orchestrated ver
sion of Led Zepplin's "Whole
Lotta Love". This version does
not belong on record: maybe as
'part of the soundtrack to
"Godzilla Gets Married", but
not on this album.
On a more surprising note,
the LSO managed to produce a
decent version of the Rolling
Stones song "Paint it Black".
Other decent songs include
Procol Harem's "A Whiter
Shade of Pale". Harry Nillson s
Fodor-The “Jagg er
Of Classical Music”
Eugene Fodor appears Sunday.
The young, handsome, and
athletic violinist Eugene Fodor
has won the admiration of music
lovers around the world with his-
virtuosi tic performances and
charismatic character. •
The 26-year-old violinist, who
lives in Turkey Creek. Colorado,
achieved international fame
when he captured the highest
prize awarded by the 1974
Tchaikovsky International Vio
lin Competition in Mosccjw.
Although Eugene's success
seems to have happened over
night. he has actually been
performing,on the violin since
the age of eight. At age 11. he
made his debut with the Denver
Symphony.
Later Eugene studied at the
University of Southern Califor
nia, Juiiliard, Meadowmount.
and Indiana University.
Fodor has performed
music capitols of North America.
South America, Europe, the
Soviet Union, and Japan.
While not jetting around the
world and playing in its major
concert halls, Eugene enjoys an
outdoor life on his 180-acre
ranch in Turkey Creek, Colora
do. where he is an accomplished
horseman and trainer.
The handsome virtuoso, who
PEOPLE magazine has called
"the Mick Jagger of classical
musk," has attracted a large
following of young people wjr
attend his concerts with /eli-
gious fervor.

"Without You", and 10 cc's
"I'm Not in Love”.
The treatment of the Moody
Blues * ‘ Knights in White Satin’ ’
was a major disappointment.
But, of all the songs. Queen's
"Bohomian Rhapsody " and the
Beatles "Lucy in the Sky With
Diamonds" come off sounding
the worst. While "Whole Lotta
Love" is bad in a comical way.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" is al
most as bad as Queen's version,
a fact I considered impossible
before Arst listen. While Queen
deserves such'shoddy treatment,
the Beatles do not. While I can
think of many songs by the
Beatles to orchestrate, you have
to remember that this is a
blatant example- of musical
commercialization that one
would expect from the same
organization that gave us such
notable B.S. as: The Bee Gees.
Saturday Night Fever (movie
and album!, Sgl. Peppers
Lonely Hearts Club Band
(movie and album), and Grease
(Movie and album).
While I'm almost afraid to
ask. I must know; Robert
Stigwood. what the hell do you
plan to do next?
Jean Michael Jarre: "Equi-
noxe";
Welcome to Close Encounters
of the fourth kind. Mr Jarre
plays space age music on space
age keyboards (16 to be exact).
Sounds strange? You're right.
This is deAnilely not music
for people with normal tastes.
While I don't claim to know
what "normal" musical taste is.
I sure do know what abnormal
is._ Providing you can lie with a
straight face, you might be able
to convince some people that
this isn't really miistc at all, but
either: . (a) selected pieces of
music created by NASA design
ed for the purpose of fc communi
cating with extra-lexrestrVi
beings (sound familiar movie
fans?)
(b) o*, a recording of ten
chipmonks running across six
teen keyboards simultaneously.
While I tend to support the
latter theory, it could very well
be the soundtrack to some
unreleased sci-Action flick.
But. if that's what you’re into
that's fine with me. To each his
own. My only warning is not to
meditate while playing this
music. You may never be the
same. And as far as 1 know, you
can’t be deprogrammed either.
Trillion: "Trillion":
The debut alfmm by Trillion
happens to be rather enjoyable.
The musical performances are
top notch, and the music has a
certain degree of vitality to it
But. this is the type of band that
gives critics nightmares, unless
you are the type of critic who
loves to unmercifully land often
unjustly) crucify a band just
because they sound like some
one else.
Yet. that's the whole problem
A couple of songs sound like
either Styx, supertramp, or
Rush. The rest sound like a
combination of the three. Thus,
(he band has no real distin
guishable personality of Us
own. Which is too bod. because
there is definitely some real
potential here
