Mercer University Theatre
along with Macon Act will soon
be presenting T® Be Young.
Gifted and Black The play is a
portrait of Lorraine rfana berry
in her own words adapted by
Robert Nemiroff. Nemiroff was
once Lorraine Hansberry 's hus
band; however., they were
divorced at the time of her
death. The play is a tribute to
honor her.
Lorraine Hansbeny was a
playwright. Significantly, she
was the first black playwright to
break into Broadway in the mid
twentieth century. Raisin in the
1958. was her first
\prominent work, and brought to
then unknown actor,
Sidney Poitier. Through her
works. Black Theatre especially
flourished during the 1960’a.
To Be Young. Gifted and
Black has a universal appeal. It
explains how an artist feels
toward her works. The play is
taken from cuttings from
Hansbeny s other plays, diaries,
personal letters, and unpublish
ed works. It is a look at her life
through biographical data and
cuttings. *
Through this play, the Mer
cer Theatre will be participating
in Black History Month, an
important contribution to Mer
cer and Macon. The group will
be presenting the play at Macon
Jr. College on February 21st.
and at Ft. Valley State on the
24th. However, for Mercer
students and the Macon com
munity the play will be
presented on February 23rd at
8:00 p.rfi: at the Grand Opera
House. Tickets are 84.00 for

Rich Returns Feb. 27
Ruth Anne Rich, associate
professor at the Kansas City
Conservatory of Music, will
present a piano recital Tuesday.
February 27 at 8 p.m. in Mercer
University's Ware Recital Hall.
A native Maconite. the
pianist is the daughter of Dr.
and Mrs. Arthur Rich. She
.holds the Doctor of Musical Arts
degree from the Eastman
School of Music, the Master of
Music degree from Peabody
Conservatory, and the Bachelor
of Music degree magna cum
laude from Florida State Uni
versity. She also holds the
Diplome de Virtuosite from the
Schola Canto rum in Paris and
the Licentiate in Piano Perfor
mance from the Royal Academy
included Leon Fleisher, Cecile
Genhart. Brooks Smith and
Nadia Boulanger. She was
formerly chairman of the
department of music at Valdos
ta State College.
She has given concerts in
Europe, including Paris, Gene
va. Lisbon and London, as well
as the Orient, and in America
she has performed in many of
the principal musical centers.
Her program will include
tyondo a Capriccio and Sonata in
C major Op. 2 number 3 by
Beethoven and Chopin's Twelve
Etudes. Op. 25.
Mercer University will spon
