Film Season Ends With “Annie Hall”

The SUAB Film Committee
winds up its season t^iis quarter
with Aaaie Hall, a 1977 .
box-office smash written by and
starring Woody Allen. The filcq.
v. hirh is descriljpd by Allen as a
romantic comedy about, a
contemporary urban neurotic",
is* filmed primarily in and
around Manhattan, although a
few scenes were shot in the
Pathe Studios at 106th Street
anu rark Avenue.
Woody Allen, acclaimed' all
over the world as today’s
foremost comic genius, began
his career while still in high
school by senogags to
newspaper column^ts. .and
became a writer Iqr Sid Caesar
and others after graitoqtion. His
first, movie. What’s New,
Pussycat?, in which AUen was
both writer and actor, was a
smash hit. as was his next film.

appearance in a movie that he
did not partially co-create.
Bom in Los Angeles, Diane
Keaton was a drama major at
Santa Ana College where she
began her theatrical career by
playing a variety of roles in
productions ranging from con
temporary musicals to Shake
speare. After graduation from
college. Diane moved to New
York City and made her
Broadway debut in 1968 as the
feminine lead in HAIR. Next
came her co-starring role with
Woody Allen in the Broadway
production of Play It Again.
Sam. In 1970 she made her film
debut in Lovers and Other
Strangers.

Since then. Diane’s film
credits have included the role of
A1 Pacino’s wife ii» both
"Godfather" movies, and her
starring role in Looking for Mr.
Goodhar. Annie Hall is Diane’s
fourth movie opposite Woody
AUen, following Play It Again.
Sam, Sleeper, and Love and
Death.

Triumph over tragedy. It 's
almost impossible to achieve,
and it usually comes only after
long periods of frustration and
near despair. But when it doe*
happen, it mokes ail the effort
that much more rvorthwhile.
Lynn-Holly Johnson is n
former Ice Capades feature-
skater lumed-actresa who steals
the show in Columbia's Ice
Castles. She portrays Lexie'
Winston, n 1%-year-old girl from
Woverly. Iowa. Lexie has
dreamed all her life of the
Olympics, and gets her once-in-'
I is
discovered' by skating coach
Deborah Mack land (Jennifer
Warren) at a regional contest.
Lexie. despite 'grave reserva
tions from her overprotective
father (Tom Skerrittl, leaves
home and trains Jor the 'big
lime'. Just as she is becoming
well-known however. Lexie has
s tragic fall on the ice-which
leaves her virtually blind.
Back home in Waverly. she
lives the life of a hermit, not
caring what will happen to her
in the future, until she is
snapped out of her doldrums by
two .special peopls. Beulah

Smith is the owner -of the
broken-down bowling alley and
skating rink where Lexie had
done all of her'earlier training.
Throughout the years. Smith
has served not only as Lexie's
coach, but also as a substitute
for her dead mother. Despising
the mental invalid that her
young protege has become, she
goes up to the attic where Lexie
spends roost of her time, snd
literally 'shakes some sense into
her'.
But the person who is
ultimately responsible for chang
ing Lexie's sttitude about
herself snd getting her head
together is her stubborn and
determined boyfriend. Nick
Peterson (Bobby Benson>. Nick
is a 19-year-old former college
student, who traded pre-roed
for hie passion, ice hockey.
After long arguments with both
Lexie end her dad, be wijia his
battle to see Lexie skate again.
Outatanding performances
were given by Johnson', Benson,
Dewburat. end Skerritt, per
formancet that were only
slightly detracted from by a
rather sickening music score,
which tended to turn heart
warming scenes into pure
e-hmshi end defective sound
that made it necessary for me to
ask my data repeatedly whet the
characters were saying.
But aside from this, Ice
Castles was worth seeing if only
because it made me realize that
any problem can be solved if
one works hard enough at it.
