on. The activity is debate and
the Mercer Debate team ranks
high among the top debate
teams in the country and from
April 19-23, in Lexington,
Kentucky, the Mercer team will
compete against 63 top U.S.

the National Debate Tourna

Tournament. Mr. Slagle took
great satisfaction in telling this
story. “Up at the Northwestern
Tournament v we had to face
Harvard. Well. Harvard grab
bed a judge to find out what
evidence we were using. Har
vard found out, so dad we, so we
■witched to a different game
plan and beet them. "
I asked Mr. Slagle if he
thought Mercer could take the
National Tournament this year
after finishing 19th in the country
last yesjr. “I really don’t know
and can’t predict because there
is no scoreboard and the scoring
is subjective. We are at a
disadvantage because we don’t
have a big name. Big names
have more presumption, so we
really can't tell. Actually, the
goal of our intercollegiate
program is just to get there. It’s
s big accomplishment when you
are one of the top 64 in the
country. I feel we can make it to
the elimination rounds which
will leave only the top 16

Watkins. Ronald spends ap
proximately 40 to 45 hours per
week constantly revising the
teams' nine different cases used
during a tournament. From all
these hours of work the debate
team has produced over 40,000
pieces of evidence for this
year’s debate resolution.
Despite having the smallest
budget of any team invited to
the National Tournament and
only one coach for its 6 teams,
Mercer has placed in 8 out of 11
tournaments and approximately

Mrs. Reynolds stated that she
is leaving Mercer to join her
husband as he continues his
education at Southeastern Sem
inary. Southeastern Seminary is
located .1 Wake Forest. Nortji
Carolina. The couple plan to live
in Raleigh, from which Mr.
Reynolds will commute to the
university while Mrs. Reynolds
will find employment in the city.
“My years here at Mercer
have been very rewarding,"
commented Mrs. Reynolds. She
continued, “I have gotten so
much out of working at Mercer
and with students.”
Director Hollis has been with
Mercer for two years. The
reason for leaving replied
Hollis, “is to grow professional

university. As of now, Director

He continued, “And I believe I
have succeeded in doing just
that."

year Carolyn Reynolds has
worked on the administration
staff of Mercer University.
| Reynolds’ first position was

which she held for two years.
On her third year Mrs.
Reynolds assumed the position
of the Dean of Women when the
former Dean of Women left her
position. She served in that
poeiuuu for seven years. Pre
sently, she is the Assistant to
