China Syndrome Makes Prediction
by Elizabeth Do&zeila
Everything in the world today
is not “cornin’ up roses”,
according to the China Syn
drome. Jane Fonda and Michael
Douglas star in this thriller that
reveals the dangers of a faulty
nuclear power plant to the
people in its community. It’s a
frightening prediction of what
could happen in the near future,
and it tends to make the
audience leave the theater with
wobbly knees .
Fonda portrays a television
reporter who. along with her
cameraman (Douglas), visit a
Soothe ra California power plant
in co inaction with a big
story- nippoeedly to show the\
advant ages of nuclear energy.
Hoe ever, the intended story
is no. meant to be. While
admiring the plant's operating
procedures. Fonda and Douglas
then on a war ensues, with Jane
fonda and Michael Douglas on
one side, trying to get the film
on TV, to warn the public of the
danger; and on the other side
are the industry officials trying
like heck to persuade them that
the plant is totally safe.
The pace of the film is fast
and action-packed all the way to
the end. when it comes to a
sudden and dramatic hah,
making the audience feel as
though v it had been slapped in
the face.
Plot is only one of several
^elements essential to making a
Cop-quality movie. Acting, mu
sic. and photography are also
determining factors. The China
Syndrome is fortunate to get an
A in all of these areas. Fonda
performed magnificently as
Kimberly Wells, a talented and
aggressive young reporter who
works her tushie off trying to
expose the potential danger.
Michael Ey>ugla» as Richard,
the cameraman, comes across
as stubborn, willful, and dedi
cated (not to mention good-look
ing). His performance enhanced
Fonda's, and vice versa.
U would be nice if a
soundtrack were made of CL'«
Syndrome's music, as its
suspemeful beat kept us all on
the edge of our chairs. The
cinematography was top-notch;
it included breath-taking shots
of Southern California which
greatly helped to set the mood

Tremendous interest in the
film ia due, certainly, to the
recent nuclear accident that
occurred near Harrisburg, Penn

makes the events in the Chine

Yet. even if The Chine

fiction, it would be taken
