T by Mike Cranford The Mercer Intramural Box ing Championships were a suceeea because of the efforts of the boxers themselves; they put on a show that would rival most professional boxing matches in enthusiasm and effort. Every one of the fighters exhibited the kind of intestinal fortitude that makers dedicated boxer. The fight , should have been covered by ABC and Howard Coeell so an accurate blow by blow description could be given but I will try to recap the highlights as much aa possible. Roosevelt Sampson gamely took the fight to a taller Bob Sheppard in the first bout. Sieppard, who had one other fight before, this bout, need his reach and a lightening quick right hand to keep the stronger Sampson at bey. The fight was close until the third round when Sampson’s guard dropped a little and Sheppard "dipped his hair" with a one-two punch that the edge and a At Last- Intramural Boxing Results PAGE 15 in a corner and three right hands drew first blood as the referee, Jsckie Cranford, jump ed in to stop the fight. Anyone not knowing would have thought Steve Daly and Dom DeRosa werd enemies from birth. Daly, a Sigma Nu, came out at the sound of the bell intending on finishing SAE’s DeRosa. DeRosa weathered the first attack and came beck in the second round to stun Daly with a lead right hand. The second round ended as a wrestling match with the referee having to warn the guys they were — 1 *- 1 — —t wrestle. a carbon but Daly victory. agreed to box Stokey Jackson who was 12 lbs. heavier because Jack son’s opponent didn’t show. Sheppard won the first round but the rigors of his previous fight was too much for him, and the hard-hitting Jackson Yf^O’- ed him in the second round with ah over-hand right. Bob was awarded the ‘' Sportsmanship Award" for his conduct (hiring the match, and his effort to provide another boxer a chance 156 lbs. of Mercer’s Cesar Borri mixes it ap with ROTC and Don Payne, a 166 Ib.’er from SAE also were matched because the guys they were supposed to box "chicken- • ed out". (I'm sorry there’s no other word for it.) Hunter used his elusive style and s counter attack to stay away from the stronger Payne. Aa the fight progressed. Hunter gained confidence and the two stood toe to toe and slugged it out. Another does call, Angelo Hunter by a split derision. Mike Macky, Lambda Chi Alpha and Paul Break were ' sparring partners and they too were thrown together when jaundice appeared on the becks of their opponents. These guys were going to "more or lees" spar but the crowd got "more” than they expected. Both had been training extensively and were tuned in the key of G, for go, so when the first bell rang, the competitive spirit of both men took over. It was one of the hardest fought battles of the night with both boxers capable of delivering a knock-out punch and indeed both were staggered in the second round. When the third round came, Macky had a small cut on the inside of his mouth which defeated him. Macky had been winning the fight until Bresk opened up with a flume that reopened the cut on Macky's lip. Referee stopped the contest, Paul Bresk, the winner by a TKO. Skip Dahlstram of Sigma Nu loet a split decision to Louis Clark, and be should have won. True. Louis threw the deanef, harder punches but Skip was the aggressor for the entire bout and took everything Louia dished out. Both men were looking for a knockout but Louia waited for one. punch while Dahlstram threw everything but the kitchen sink. Maybe a rematch would decide. The heavyweighta always bring out the^roar of a crowd but most of the crowd were starting to get hoarse when Kappa Sigma's Jimmie Singer and SAE'a Bill Marlow climbed into the ring. SAE was well represented in the stands and they got the crowd started again aa the 200 lb. gladiators fought each other. Singer was in better condition but Marlow 'was | stronger and they dueler}^ constantly for the duration. Another close bout with Singer Tennis Schedule winning by a split decision. The icing on the cake was an exhibition match between Gol den Gloves Champions Jakey Winters and Alvin Dixon. A hush fell over the crowd as the) seemed to sense the intensity of these two serious Olympic contenders. All eyes were glued on the ring as the spectators witnessed the true art of boxing aa these two pushed themselves to the limit each round. The bout was declared a draw to the approval of the crowd and Intramural Boxing came to an end. Kappa Sigma won the team award for the roost victories. They entered two and won two. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the men who participated and helped during the match. Without you, it wouldn't have been successful. We will have another Intramural match in the spring and due to the success of our events. Intramural points will be awarded, starting next year. So start grooming your candidate.
