The completed medal grew out
of his memories of Maxwell

which was pat-formed by the

with Daugherty playing the part
of Eadraa.
. "Not until 1976." Daugherty

"Aftrr showing the obverse

would be turning inward,
convoluted and introspective.
Here was a theme of universal
significance, and Maxwell An
derson may have expressed it
more simply and beautifully
than anyone els*. Eadraa
concludes.
" ‘yet is my mind my own. yet
is my heert a cry toward
something dim in distance,
which is higher than I am and
makes me emperor of the
endless dark, evenln snaking'."
The other medal accepted for
the Smithsonian Collection.
Apollonian-Dionysian, "vil
modeled by Daugherty in 1976.
The medal was inspired by the
German philosopher, Frieda rich
Nietzsche.
“Nietzsche symbolized the
polarities of experience by
contrasting what be called the
'Apollonian', representing form
and rationality,.with the ‘Diony
sian’ concept of creativity and
ecstatic irrationality," Daugh
erty said. "Thi* medal com
memorates the reconciliation of
two force* often thought to be at
war.”
“Tha youth of the observe is
shown advancing into tba
presence of Apollo, god of light,
beauty and harmony. The
reveres shows a young satyr,
one of tha wild men of the
woods who danced attendance
to tha god Dionysus. Hi* cult
symbolizes tha renewal of life
