University Student Center
Named In Honor
A convocation marking the naming of
the Mercer University Student Center
Building for the late George Boyce
Connell will be held Thursday. March
15.
Dr. Connell served as president of the
alma mater from 1963 until his death on
April 21. 1959. He earliet had served for
six years as vice-president under Dr.
Spright Dowell.
Dr. Welcome Talmadge Smalley.
Emeritus professor of English, will
express the memorial remarks at a
convocation luncheon in the dining room
of the Student Center.
A portrait of Dr. Connell will be
presented the University by Mr. and
Mrs. Guyton Abney. Macon. Mr. Abney
is a member of the president's council
and a former trustee.
Present at the ceremonies will be Mrs.
Connell, a resident of Buie's Creek.
North Carolina, members and friends of
the Connell family, and officers
faculty of the University.
The Student Center was constructed
during 1957 it an approximate cost of
3750.000. The building houses a
cafeteria, offices of the Dean of Men and
Dean of Women, office for student
organisations, lounges and club meeting
rooms, a music room, a snack bar. game
room, and a lecture-assembly room.
Harvey Robert Vansant. senior, will
deliver a solo at the ceremony,’
accompanied by Lloyd Brewer, Jr. they
are both students of the Mercer Music
Department.

is offering three weekend packages
during the May 20-June 5 Festival. With
savings of more than 10%, the three
packages include excellent tickets to
opera, theater, dance and chamber
music events The packages are a new
ticket-buying opportunity.offering con
venience and savings to area residents
with busy week-day schedules and
out-of-towners.

Highlights of the - three weekend
packages include two new opera
productions. “Madame Butterfly" and
"Antony and Cleopatra." The Pitts
burgh Symphony Orchestra, the Dance
Theatre of Harlem. Elisa Monte Dance
Company. "Deed End Kids" a play by
New York City's Mabou Mines Com
pany, and Chamber Music Concerts
under the direction of Scott Nickrenx and
Paula Robison.

Gorgon and the Manticore" at 8:30 r.m.

Film maker Ken Russell will make his
American opera directorial debut with
Puccini's "Madame Butterfly.” Well-
known tor his film succeatua, including
“Women in love." “Tommy," and
“Altered States." Ken Russell staged an
acclaimed production- of “The Rake's
Progress" in Italy last May.
Russell plana to change the time of the
action of "Madame Butterfly" from the
early 1900'* to shortly before World War
n. while retaining the locale of Nagasaki,
Japan. Catherine Lamy. the American
aoprano, will sing the title role, with
Barry McCauley as her Pinkerton.
Spoleto Festival founder end artistic
director Gian Carlo Maoctti will direct
togera A
Cleopatra." Christian Badea, Spoleto'a
music direkor, will conduct the opera, in
the revised version originally staged by
Menotti at Juilliard in 1975. Esther
Hinds, who appeared at the 1978, 1979
and 1982 Festivals in Charleston, will
repeat her Juilliard role of Cleopatra.
Jeffrey Wells will sing Antony.
Menotti’s "The Unicom, the Gorgon
and the Manticore." a madrigal ballet
with new choreography by Salvatore
Aiello, will be performed by the North
Carolina Dance Theater and the
Westminister Choir, Joseph Flummer-
felt, director.
Mabou Mines, a New York theatre
company, will present "Dead End
Kids." The play, by JoAnne Akalaitis.
has been described as “a nuclear
comedy.”
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
^will perform under the baton of
Stanialaw Skrowacaewski. The second
and third performances will feature
pianist Misha Dichter.
Tickets for indrviduaTFestival events
will be available in mid-March. In
addition to the events offered in the
weekend packages, Spoleto Festival.
U.S.A. has announced several other
events for which individual tickets will
also be available in mid-March.
In opera, the Festival will present the
American stage premiere of Pergolesi's
1735 comic opera "D Flaming)."
Other dance events in Spoleto '83’s
weekend package include the Dance
Theatre of Harlem under the direction of
Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, the
David Gordon/Pick Up Co., and ‘die
North Carolina Dance Theater.
Soprano Elisabeth Soderstrom will
give a recital, and there will be a series
of special concerts featuring Marvis
Martin, jaxz artist Stephans Grappelli,
and others. Outdoor events will include
an orchestral concert at Middleton Place
and a jaxz picnic.
San Francisco's Antenna Theatre will
stage "Artery," and Margaret Rawlings
will appear in the U.S. premiere of Jason
Lindsey's monologue "Empress Eugen
ie."
The visual arta of Spoleto '83 will
include exhibitions of recent works by
Louise Nevelson. Robert Courtright and
Sandra Baker. The exhibitions will be
shown throughout the Festival at -the
Gibbes Art Gallery.
Major funding for Spoleto U.S.A.
comes from the State of South Carolina,
the City and County of Charleston and
the National Endowment for the Arts.
Important corporate contributors include
the Evening Post and The News and
Courier Companies, Kiawah Island
Company, duPont, IBM, Seabrook
Island Company, Cummins, Inc., Gener
al Dynamics, Amoco Chemicals, Exxon.
Burger King, McDonald's, Holiday Inn

Jeremiah People
To Perform
The Jeremiah People, a 10-member
Christian Song and drama group, will
petfoiui at the Grand Opera House on
March 8,7:30 p.m. General admission is
34-5 in advance. 5 at the door.
The group is nationally known and
tours across the country using upbeat,
middle of the road. Christian music
combined with dramatic sketches to
present their programs.
The Opera House program will be
centered around the things that keep
together a Christ-centered family unit.
Tickets are available at Accents in
Macon Mall. Macon Christian Bookstore
and at the Grand Opera House.
